  • A Message from the Principal

    Dear #aWESome Wildcat Families,

On July 16, 2020, the District announced that all schools will open in Universal Remote Learning Model (URL) on August 17, 2020. I acknowledge that this announcement caused a range of emotions that I fully understand and recognize. However, I also know, based on our history as a strong school community, together we will accomplish great things!

As we have witnessed since March, information, data and decisions frequently change based on what is occurring with COVID and other impacting factors. Please know it is my goal to keep you informed by communicating updates such as important announcements, dates, etc. so you are aware of what is happening both at the district level as well as at Woodland.

We are taking the information that was shared at the board meeting, including schedule guidelines, to create a schedule for our school. Your child’s schedule that is being developed includes specific times for subject areas as well as when daily synchronous (live virtual instruction with the teacher and students) and asynchronous (pre-recorded lessons, assigned tasks, etc. that students can work through at their own pace) learning will occur. In addition, we are building in short breaks throughout the day, lunch time and 30 minute specials.

Your child’s schedule will be shared with you at your virtual Open House with your child’s teacher on August 13th.

For our rising Pre-K and Kindergarten students and any new students to Woodland, we are so excited for you to join the Wildcat family. We know this is a big milestone in your child’s life, and we are working hard to plan activities to help make this transition smooth.

For all families, below is additional information you can expect to receive by August 7th:

    1. Device & Workbook/Textbook Distribution Details Including Dates/Times2

    2. Microsoft Teams Parent Support Resources

    3. Virtual Open House Details- While this will be virtual, we are working to create an experience where families will get to meet their teachers, learn about WES, and feel comfortable about starting school, so Save the Date!

    August 13th

    MOID: 8:30-9:00am

    Pre K/K: 9:00-9:50am

    1st Grade: 10:00-10:50am

    2nd Grade: 11:00-11:50am

    3rd Grade: 12:00-12:50pm

    4th Grade: 1:00-1:50pm

    5th Grade: 2:00-2:50pm

On August 10th, you should be able to log into your Infinite Campus Parent Portal account to view your child’s homeroom teacher. You can log into your Campus Parent Portal Account or set up one if you have not done so already at http://www.fultonschools.org/infinitecampus.

At last week’s FCS Board meeting, several items were discussed. One of those items included the introduction of a Reopening Matrix. This matrix describes how FCS will begin the process of moving from a model of Universal Remote to a Face to Face model. Please note that it says, "The district PLANS to move to Phase I of URL on September 8th". This is all contingent upon the data and Dr. Looney will make that decision. Additional details related to the Reopening Matrix are will be released soon.

We have fine-tuned both teacher and school expectations for Universal Remote Learning and are committed to starting a successful school year with some SPARK!

    S - Student Supports

    • Daily live synchronous instruction will be delivered through consistent schedules to students and parents. Schools will follow a district-established scheduling guide. Students in grades 2-12 will be issued devices. Please be on the lookout for processes related to student device check in/out, and device distribution that will come to you prior to the start of school on August 17th.

    • The District will provide non-digital resources and support to students in prekindergarten through 1st grade through district packets and consistent teacher communication. Schools will augment district packets with digital resources.

    • SEC and ESOL packets are required resources for these populations along with general education packets.

    P - Parent Supports

    • The District will provide level specific parent supports to assist in student learning.

    • The District will utilize a defined and focused menu of applications.

    A - Accountability

    • The District will introduce attendance accountability for student engagement during Universal Remote Learning.

    • Alternative grading guidance will be implemented during Universal Remote Learning.

    R - Resources for Teachers

    • District, school-based instructional leaders, and teachers will receive ongoing professional learning opportunities to assist them with effective synchronous (digital live) and asynchronous (digitally static) instruction. This will include the use of a bank of pre-recorded lessons.

    • Individual Remote Learning is on pause. GAVS and FVS classes will continue.

    K - Kids

    • The district will provide specific Social and Emotional programming.

    • Limited and safe varsity athletics and marching band practices and activities. Student clubs will continue virtually.

There have been rumors related to a September 8, 2020 school start date. This is not the case. We will start in a URL model on August 17th. Please see a summary of important dates below.

    • August, 17th, first day of school via Universal Remote Learning

    • September 8th, potentially the start of phase 1 of reopening

Should you have questions for us at Woodland (building 996), please email them to 996-remotelearning@fultonschools.org.

Finally, I want to thank each of you for being a part of our Wildcat Family. We truly are one #aWESome school community and together I know we will help our students reach high levels of success! Please take a moment to tell your child that I deeply miss him/her, am so proud of their resilience and positive attitude and SO look forward to the day I get to safely give them a high five, handshake or hug! I am honored and proud to serve our students and school community and I look forward to meeting (and exceeding ) the challenge of these unprecedented times. #togetherwearebetter

    Regards,

    Tara McGee
