  • Letter from the Principal

    July 30, 2022

    Greetings Woodland Wildcat Families!

We are 5 days away from seeing you at Open House/Sneak Peek and welcoming you to the 2022-2023 school year! We are extra excited to welcome our new Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Wildcats to their first “big” school experience, as well as our families that are new to the Woodland School Community!

Please take the time to read this entire communication for important information that will help you and your child with navigating Open House/Sneak Peek and help us get off to a successful start.

    Important Information

    Open House / Sneak Peek

Open House/Sneak Peek is Thursday, August 4, 2022, from 12:00pm -3:30pm. Please plan your visit accordingly. As a reminder, we have over 950 families at Woodland Elementary School. We will need to receive important information from you as you enter, as you visit each station, so thank you in advance for your patience, respect, and flexibility!

Please be mindful that class placements and teacher assignments are tentative until after our district-wide 10- day enrollment count.

During your visit, you will be able to become familiar with our school building, receive transportation information, set up lunch accounts, receive information about afterschool care, set-up your Infinite Campus parent portal account for viewing assignments/grades, progress reports, and report cards. Lastly, you and your child will be able to visit your child’s classroom to meet their teacher!

This will also be a time for you to learn about our wonderful PTO and how you may become a member! Feel free to visit the PTO link from our school website to learn more. Our school’s success is a direct result of our strong home-school partnerships. Our PTO provides and supports many aspects of our Wildcats’ memorable experiences, including academic and social events. Joining our PTO and becoming an active member is a great way to engage in supporting our Wildcats!

    For 2nd Grade Parents

This coming school year, the district is requiring all rising second grade students to provide proof of residency documents to continue in the enrolled school. You must provide a current water or electric bill and a current lease or mortgage statement. We will be providing an early bird opportunity for you to drop off these documents in advance to avoid the lines at the open house. Please make a copy of the required documents and place them in an envelope with your child’s first and last name written on the outside of the envelope. We will have a drop off box at the front door of the school. The gate is unlocked from 6:00 AM-6:00 PM Monday-Friday. We will also have stations at Open House/Sneak Peek on Thursday August 4th from 12:00-3:30 to provide this documentation.

    School Nutrition

Children need healthy meals to learn. Fulton County Schools offers healthy meals daily at a reasonable price. At elementary schools, the price for breakfast is $1.10 and lunch is $2.45. Students may qualify for free meals or for reduced-priced meals. The reduced price is $0.30 for breakfast and $0.40 for lunch. Parents can put money in their student’s account for meals and/or extra sales, view account balances and purchase history, and set up low-balance reminders by visiting www.mypaymentsplus.com. Cash or check payments can also be made at your student’s school.

The Free & Reduced Meal Benefits Program is a part of the National Child Nutrition Program. This program makes free or reduced-priced meals available to qualifying households. Qualifications are based on the gross income of all household members and the number of persons living in the house. A NEW application must be completed for the 2022-2023 school year. Due to COVID-19 National Waivers, families did not have to complete an application during the last school year. However, these waivers are no longer in effect and all families must complete an application for SY22-23 if they wish to be considered for free and reduced meal benefits this year. The household is responsible for payment of meals until the Free and Reduced Application is approved. Free & Reduced Meal Applications are available anytime online.

Visit www.fulton.schoollunchapp.com to begin the online application process. Families may obtain a paper application from any school cafeteria. If possible, families are encouraged to complete an online application as soon as possible. If you go to the website, families will be able to receive the QR code and apply directly from your cellphones.

New This School Year: Convenient Option for Smart Birthday Celebrations

As we begin the new school year, maximizing time for teaching and learning, the dropping off or sending in of birthday treats will be prohibited. Our Cafeteria may provide, at a cost to the parent, frozen treats, $1.00 each for your child and their class. All treats are big 9 allergen-free, unless indicated. There are a variety of flavors and a non-dairy option. The birthday treat meets USDA requirements for smart snacks in school, and the Cafeteria Staff delivers it to your child’s class for all to enjoy!! Be sure to sign-up and pay for this convenience during Open House/Sneak Peek.

    Early Bus Drop-Offs

Bus drivers are often the first Fulton County School (FCS) district employees our students see in the morning and the last employees they see when they arrive at their bus stop.

We appreciate the dedication of our drivers and the understanding of our parents as we face a historically challenging driver shortage district-wide, state-wide, and nation-wide. Effective August 8, 2022, all bus routes will have an earlier arrival to school and drop-off time. Students will be dropped off at school at 7:00 am daily. If your child is receiving breakfast at school, our cafeteria will be ready to serve them. Please make sure you signup for Here Comes the Bus, at https://www.fultonschools.org/Page/7389. It is a free, easy-to-use website and app that enables you to see the location of your child’s school bus on a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer. This way, you know when the bus is near your stop, so you can send your child out at just the right time. No more worrying about whether your child has missed the bus!

FCS has an amazing and dedicated group of over 600 drivers that we are actively trying to expand. At this point, FCS is still looking to fill 200 vacancies and is offering several very appealing incentives:

    • All employees received a 3% raise for the 2022-23 school year. For drivers with no commercial driving experience, the starting hourly rate is now $21.01. For those drivers with a CDL, the hourly rate could be higher.
    • $2,000 hiring bonus for new drivers who work throughout the 2022-2023 school year.
    • $2,000 retention bonus for current drivers who stay with FCS throughout the 2022-2023 school year.
    • $500 referral bonus for current employees who recruit a new hire.

As Executive Director of Transportation Vickie Cross likes to say, “Opportunity is honking! So come and join our transportation family.” If a candidate has a current Georgia driver’s license and has passed an FCS background check, they can begin to work with us, and FCS will support them in obtaining their training and their Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with P and S endorsements.

Please know that our entire school team is committed to doing our very best to provide a safe, nurturing, and challenging learning environment for our Wildcats. We are looking forward to the partnership with you!

Finally, please check our school website, https://www.fultonschools.org/woodlandes and our district website, https://www.fultonschools.org, regularly for updates and new information! The staff and I look forward to seeing you soon!

    With Extreme Wildcat P.R.I.D.E.,

    Shavanda Toomer

    Principal
