College Park ES Student Health Center Dedicated to Memory of Catherine Maddox
College Park ES Student Health Center Dedicated
During her 11 years as a Fulton County Schools (FCS) board member representing District 6, including East Point, College Park and Union City, Catherine Maddox was a tireless advocate for health.
In a tribute to Maddox’s contributions to the academic, health and well-being of students and staff, College Park Elementary dedicated its Student Health Center to the memory of the former board member on September 9. Maddox had been a Grady Memorial Hospital nurse. “She was a registered nurse, just like me,” said Director, FCS Student Health Services, Lynne Meadows. “She had a special place in my heart.”
“Catherine was a true servant leader,” said FCS Board President Julia Bernath. “What a pleasure to recognize and honor my friend in a school she loved and a cause in which she believed—providing the best care and education for every child!”
A tireless advocate for the health of students, Mrs. Maddox was instrumental in the establishment of student health centers at College Park Elementary and Lake Forest Elementary. “She pushed to make sure that the health centers helped students with asthma,” Meadows said.
Chief Academic Officer Cliff Jones unveiled a plaque during the ceremony, surrounded by dignitaries and Mrs. Maddox’s husband, Robert Maddox, and son Chad. “I’m sure she’s looking down and is very proud,” Robert Maddox said.
In addition to the Maddox family, FCS Board Vice President Kimberly Dove, who now represents District 6, and board member Franchesca Warren, joined community members for the unveiling of the plaque, which will be placed on the door of the College Park Elementary Student Health Center.
“It’s such a privilege for my scholars, our community, and me to be impacted by the legacy of Mrs. Catherine Maddox,” said Dr. Maisha Otway, College Park Elementary principal.
An East Point resident for more than 25 years, Mrs. Maddox was also a founding member of the Mayor’s Education Task Force and a member of the city’s youth advisory board.
