Inclusive Schools Week Kicks Off with 5-Day Kindness Challenge
Fulton County Schools is kicking off December recognizing Inclusive Schools Week, an important opportunity for educators, students and parents to come together to celebrate students with all needs, build empathy and understanding and work toward the common goal of successfully educating and including children with a range of needs.
"Inclusive Schools Week shows the tremendous amount of work that has gone into ensuring students have inclusive opportunities throughout the school day," said Services for Exceptional Children Executive Director Blake McGaha, whose department spearheads the initiative. "Being an inclusive school district is all about community, building connections and finding common threads within our students."
The week-long celebration features a 5-Day Kindness Challenge featuring a new theme each day with suggested activities to help students understand what inclusion is and why it's so important in our society. Themes like "Happiness is a New Friend" encourages students to have lunch with someone they typically don't talk to. "We Are One" recommends students and staff wear something blue on Friday, which signifies unity.
McGaha noted the week provides an important opportunity for educators, students, and parents to discuss what else needs to be done to ensure schools continue to improve their ability to successfully educate all children.
"Now that we have come back face-to-face this is an ideal opportunity to celebrate togetherness and inclusion within our schools," said SEC Program Specialist Yvette Glover.
All week long the FCS community is encouraged to use the hashtag #SEC_ISW to tweet pictures and activities. Be sure to tag the SEC Department @FCS_SEC.
