FCS Hot Weather Advisory for Outside Activities
Fulton County Schools' top priority is the health and safety of our students and staff. Temperatures and heat indexes are high this week, and FCS staff have been monitoring. School personnel have been advised to take all necessary precautions to keep students and staff safe in potentially extreme temperatures. If the National Weather Service publishes a heat index of 95° or greater, we recommend to our staff that elementary and middle schools cancel outside recess.
Fulton County Schools follows the GHSA guidelines and policies concerning heat and weather. The safety of our student athletes will remain our highest priority. The changing weather conditions are continuously monitored during practice to make sure that we are complying with all of the guidelines. For football practice, the guidelines can include shorter practices, more water breaks, or the reduction in equipment (Helmets and shoulder pads vs full pads, or helmets only, or no outdoor practices). The trainers and staff also ensure that water, ice, and Gatorade is readily available for the athletes during practice and games. The district has also shared tips on proper hydration, warning signs of heat exhaustion, and other safety guidelines with the schools and athletes. We have several schools that have practiced in the morning before school or they have pushed practice times back in the evenings. Our trainers and coaching staff will continue to monitor the weather as we move forward. The district also uses EAAP's (Emergency Athletic Action Plans) to make sure that we have a plan of action in case we do have a medical emergency.
