DID YOU KNOW? FCS Schools Launch New STEM Mobile Learning Experience

Posted 3/31/2022

Fulton County Schools students in the Banneker High School feeder pattern, are ready and set to show their scientific knowledge as they “level up” to connect, collaborate, and participate in a new STEM Mobile Bus Exploration Experience. Beginning March 2022, the STEM Exploration Bus Team is scheduled to bring excitement to school field trips, consisting of hands-on STEM activities and cooperative learning, directly to the doorsteps of each elementary school in Zones 1 and 2.

This “Bridge to Success” project will continue into the 2022-23 school year and was developed by Zone 1 Superintendent Dr. Cherisse Campbell, to engage students in STEM areas and encourage them to become change agents in their communities. Dr. Campbell explained, “Through the in-school field trips which launched in early March, and the community-based Mobile Learning Experiences that will come this fall, we are excited to not only grow our students’ STEM and literacy skills, but also their soft skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity by engaging their hearts and minds in real-world STEM problems that matter.”

The STEM Mobile Learning Experience is in partnership with Kennesaw State University (KSU), who helped design the STEM mobile bus, and Daydreamers Academy, designers of “Dr. Inspire” and the special comic book to accompany the program. Through this experience, students learn to become Agents of C.H.A.N.G.E., and will each receive a series of graphic comic workbooks covering the seven dimensions of science, aligned to the 7 Science Units of Study.

“Science is a verb, and our scholars learn by doing. Three-dimensional science calls for students to plan and carry out investigations, use and develop models, ask questions, and define problems.  Programs like the FCS mobile learning experience provide opportunities for our students to put these practices into action outside of the classroom”, said Nicole Ford, K-5 Science Program Specialist. Ford also adds that “Change is an acronym for Call to Action, Healthy Habits, Adding Green Spaces, Now We’re Cooking, Growing in Harmony, and Everyone is Important. Students will work through these campaigns while reinforcing the skills that they are learning in their science classrooms, as well as support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to become real change agents for their classrooms, schools, communities, and beyond.”
