First Day Fulton Helps Families Prepare for New School Year
First Day Fulton is happening on Saturday, July 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at both North Springs and Banneker high schools. This back-to-school pep rally is designed to provide families with all the resources they need before the first day of school starts on Monday, August 8.
The purpose of the event is to get students and families excited about the first day of school and provide them with the resources needed to be successful,” explained Yngrid L. Jones-Huff, Fulton County Schools’ executive director of Operational Planning.
To encourage families new to Fulton County Schools to complete registration paperwork early, families can now enroll new students and provide residency information on Registration Day, held Friday, July 29 from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. For a list of schools hosting Registration Day, please visit fultonschools.org/registrationday.
There is also limited opportunity to register new students at First Day Fulton. Parents must sign up for on-site registration at fultonschools.org/firstdayfulton.
Free physical and mental health screenings, immunizations and 3300 forms, free and reduced lunch applications, bus route information, interpreter services and school supplies are available at the event. The Atlanta Community Food Bank and World Changers Church International will also distribute food to families in attendance.
“We will give away well over 2,000 backpacks,” said Jones-Huff.
Also at First Day Fulton, departments will be present to help families learn more about areas such as special education, PreK, Talented and Gifted, school social work and health services, and more.
“It’s a full exhibition of Fulton County Schools and the programs and resources we provide to students and families,” explained Jones-Huff.
To pull off both events at multiple locations successfully, Fulton County Schools depends upon volunteers to make the event run smoothly, greet and guide families, help with form intake, distribute food and school supplies, and other roles.
Brenan Stearns, part of Fulton County Schools’ Operational Planning department, is on the committee coordinating logistics for both events.
“The event could not happen without the help of employees who volunteer for this,” he said. “We couldn’t do it without them.”
In addition, there are several sponsors that make these events possible.
Said Jones-Huff, “[These two events are] a big campaign to get students there on day one. Learning starts on day one.”
