Mary M. Bethune Fourth Grader Wins State Beta Club Award
Posted 01/11/2022
Mary M. Bethune Elementary fourth grader Adedayo Adedokun brought home the Beta Club Award for Math in Georgia competition. His coach and Bethune Elementary teacher Tierra Bagby says, “It was his mathematic talent and confidence that carried him to becoming the winner.”
Adedokun beat out other top-performing fourth graders throughout Georgia in the competition and will next face off with fourth graders across the nation. The computerized competition allowed 45 minutes for students to answer 50 questions. The scores were determined by who answered the questions in the shortest amount of time with the most correct answers. Bagby says, “Adedokun completed the test with time to spare. He was super cool and super fast.”
Additionally, Bagby is impressed with Adedokun’s confidence. “I’m sure it played a role in his victory, outside of his mathematical talent,” she says. “He’s currently carrying that same bravado into the national competition.”
Principal Taylor Pratt is always proud of his students. “Honors like this shine a light on the extraordinary students that I know they are,” he says. “I’ve been with our school for six years now. I’ve seen the great things students do and how much progress they’ve made over time.”
When it comes to the work that Bagby puts into the students, Pratt gives her high praise. “She worked with them every week after school as they prepared for the competition,” he shares. “She’s a complete advocate for the students and the students having more opportunities.”
In the summer of 2022, the next level of Beta Club math competition will take place in Nashville, TN, in person. Principal Pratt is excited and confident that his students, once again, will represent Bethune Elementary well. “It’s a lot of hard work, but I get to be fortunate enough to see it,” Pratt said. “The real hard work is done by the students.”
