Cambridge High School Girls' Cross Country

It's a "three-peat" for the Cambridge High School Girls' Cross Country team who won the Georgia High School Association's (GHSA) State Championship, for the third year in a row. The Lady Bears are one of only two teams in the larger classifications in this decade to win three consecutive championships.

Under the guidance of Cross Country Coach Brad Coulter, the team ran a very difficult course over many hills and around several schools. They began in the back but, as a group with measured strategy, eventually overtook the other runners to win in the last 200 meters.

The team includes: Team Captain, Ashley Sechrest, Anna Filipek, Lola Merrill, Camila Montes, Emily Meeker, Kathryn Suplee, Izzy Filipek, and alternates Katie Malone and Afton Hirschi.

With several top scorers having graduated last year, Ashley led this year's team, many of whom were new to varsity competition, to strengthen their game to ultimately defeat the two teams favored by the track associations.

Shivan Suchetas poses with the FCS Board

Alpharetta High School Debate Champions

Two Alpharetta High School (AHS) seniors and long-standing debaters have taken top awards in two national competitions. Suchetas Bokil and Shivan Moodley have participated in debate all four years and are described by their debate coach Lauren Ivey as a virtually "unstoppable" collaboration. They have won hundreds of debate awards on multiple levels.

These students are known as hard workers, excellent students academically, school leaders and give back to their community. Suchetas is vice president of Student Council, president of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), co-captain of the Debate team, and spends his free time recording books for the blind. Shivan will graduate AHS as the most successful debater ever to graduate from the school and one of the most successful public school debaters in the state. He has very actively recruited debaters to the program.

Suchetas and Shivan qualified to compete in the national Tournament of Champions three times and won the majority of rounds along with a $7000 scholarship to attend a summer debate camp at the University of Michigan. Their current team ranking is tenth in the U.S.

Suchetas was recently accepted to Harvard University and Shivan will be attending Emory University. Both are considering careers in politics and law.
