FCS Volunteers, Partners at Samaritan's Feet Shoe Distribution
Fulton County Schools (FCS), BB&T, Aerotropolis Atlanta, and the City of East Point were among the partners who turned out recently to distribute shoes and socks at the Samaritan's Feet Community Shoe Distribution. Families arrived as early as 7:45 a.m. for the 10 a.m. event. "I appreciate everything you've done for my family today," said Lee Tilman, a single mother and parent of eight.
More than 80 volunteers gave 410 shoes and socks to participants. Additionally, 240 shoes and socks were left at Impact Church, where the event was held, for future distribution. Volunteers spent time with each shoe recipient by washing his or her feet, placing a new pair of athletic shoes and socks on them, and encouraging them.
"We understand in Fulton County Schools that partnership and collaboration is not only a pillar in our strategic plan, it is part of our DNA," said FCS Area Superintendent Dr. Gyimah Whitaker.
Samaritan's Feet was started in 2003 by Manny Ohonme, who received his first pair of shoes from a missionary when he was a child in Nigeria. Those shoes allowed him to learn and play basketball, ultimately earning him a sports scholarship in the United States. The organization's mission is to bring that same message of hope and love to children and adults in the United States and around the world.
