Westlake Senior Holds Free Writing Workshop To Help Other Students
Alexis Jacobs, candidate for an International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma and Talented and Gifted (TAG) senior at Westlake High School (HS), held a "free" writing workshop recently to help other students.
"I decided to do the writing rescue mission workshop because I'm passionate about writing," Jacobs said. "As an IB diploma student, I found that all of my courses require some kind of extensive writing. Students sometimes miss the most basic components of writing when they construct their introductory, body, or conclusion paragraphs, so I decided to create a workshop that would give my peers and younger students an opportunity to develop more confidence in their writing skills."
Madison Hill, who will enter the fourth grade at Cliftondale Elementary, got a head start for the school year by increasing writing skills during the workshop. "I learned you need a thesis, background and a hook for your introduction," Hill said. "I also learned you need to be very specific with your writing."
At the conclusion of the workshop, Jacobs learned things about her students and herself. "I learned that my students were eager to learn," Jacobs said. "I also realized that they're patient and willing to work with me, because they know I'm a kid too."
In addition to being an IB diploma candidate, Jacobs is an Ambassador Girl Scout working to complete her gold award. Her passions are writing, film, and photography, and she's won several awards for her academic excellence at Westlake HS, including the Principal's Award and Principal's list.
