March is National School Social Work Month
The State of Georgia and Fulton County Schools recognize the week of March 4th - 8th as School Social Work Week.
Fulton County School Social Workers uplift the lives of students and families each day by serving as the link between home, community and school. School Social Workers are equipped to identify, assess and explore the barriers that impact student success. On a day to day basis, School Social Workers advocate for student’s rights, provide consultative support to administration and educate staff on school policy and procedures. School Social Workers lead trainings such as Suicide Prevention, Attendance Intervention Module and Child Welfare and Safety, to name a few. Their intervention is crucial to the success of our school community.
Examples of other services provided by School Social Workers are as follows:
- link students and families to mental health support
- assist homeless families and students
- link students and families to economic resources
- assist students with college applications/financial aid
- provide character references for students
- interface with the juvenile court system and DFCS
- provide parent workshops
- organize special programs for truancy prevention
- provide technical assistance on attendance data
- establish mentorship programs for students
- help parents navigate the school system and access support
- mediate student disputes and teach problem solving techniques
