Superintendents read books to children at Campbell ES
Georgia's School Superintendent Richard Woods and Fulton County Schools Interim Superintendent Dr. Cindy Loe were among the VIP's who read to children at Campbell Elementary School's "For the Love of Reading."
Woods delighted young students with his joyful style as he read “The Day the Crayons Quit,” a book about colors and crayons. Dr. Loe asked questions to fifth graders as she engaged them in a discussion about “Between the Lines: How Ernie Barnes Went from the Football Field to the Art Gallery,” a book on artist Ernie Barnes.
“For the Love of Reading,” the brainchild of Campbell’s literacy coach Dr. Lawanna Owens-Twaites, is in its second year.
“I have fond memories of my parents reading to me as a child,” said Dr. Owens-Twaites. “When we read aloud to children, they begin to develop a love of reading.”
Other VIP readers included FCS School Board President Linda Bryant, Chief Academic Officer Cliff Jones, Area Superintendent Dr. Gyimah Whitaker, City of Fairburn Council Member Linda Davis, and Carlotta Rozzi, from the Georgia State University Principals Center.
Literacy is a key focus of the district’s Strategic Plan. Specifically, the plan says that 85% of third grade students will read at or above grade level by 2022.
“Our schools will always find success when we engage our community of parents, volunteers, business partners, district and state educators,” said principal Leah McDaniel. “I am so glad all of our VIP readers were able to model and celebrate a love for reading with our students.”
