Langston Hughes Student Places in Congressional Art Competition
Langston Hughes High School student David Tenga won third place in Congressman David Scott's 17th Annual Congressional Art Competition. Devonte Few, also at Langston, won Honorable Mention for his entry "Deep Blue." The students were recognized at an awards ceremony held at the Douglas County Courthouse.
For his winning entry, "A Bit of Me," Tenga was awarded a $3,500 scholarship from The Art Institute of Atlanta and a $650 summer seminar scholarship from The Savannah College of Art and Design. Additionally, "A Bit of Me" will hang in the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport's Youth Art Gallery for one year.
To date, Congressman David Scott has awarded over $600,000 in scholarships to student artists. This year AT&T and Georgia Power provided scholarships for the top three winners, including $1,000-first place, $600-second place, and $400-third place.
The 2019 winners are:
- 1st Place: "Wrinkles and Words" by Adebola Adewale, Douglas County High School
- 2nd Place: "Submit" by Kylah Dixon, Marta Ellen Stillwell School of the Arts
- 3rd Place: "A Bit of Me" by David Tenga, Langston Hughes High School
- 4th Place: "Feast" by Michael Adaba, Martha Ellen Stillwell School of the Arts
- 5th Place: "Juan Carlos with our Bird" by Yuleidi Arroyo, McEachern High School
Honorable Mention:
- "Deep Blue" by Devonte Few, Langston Hughes High School
- "Faded" by Roxy Bridges, New Manchester High School
- "Moonlit Companion" by Asiaka Jones, Dutchtown High School
- "Untitled" by Mahagoni Bracey, McEachern High School
"I am so very proud of all of the students from the Thirteenth District who participated in my 17th Annual competition," said Congressman Scott. "This year we had such an impressive level of talent displayed by our students. I am truly honored to celebrate the artistic talents of our young people, as well as their supportive families and teachers."
