FCS Hosts Record-Breaking Summer Learning Program
In June, Fulton County Schools successfully hosted a record-breaking first session of its FOCUS Summer Learning program, the largest ever for the district. The program served more students and employed more teachers than in years past, more than doubling its elementary school enrollment and nearly doubling its high school enrollment.
The summer learning program, which was created specifically to help address pandemic-related learning disruption, used $1.8 million in CARES II funds to pay teachers and other staff members.
With nearly 12,000 face-to-face students registered, 95% of students passed one or more courses while attending the robust program. Fulton Virtual School enrolled almost 4,700 students.
Supported by an engaging curriculum, benefits included letting 3-8 grade students take home and keep high interest novels. Additionally, there were 17 media centers open, more than ever before.
“What makes our program so successful is that we structured summer learning to meet students’ needs,” said FCS Director of Specials Jennifer Beard. “Students were excited to be in the classroom learning with their peers. There was an energy unlike anything I have seen in the past.”
Late registration is available for Summer Learning Session #2. Parents and students can register in person at the summer learning sites June 29-July 2. Find more information here.
