Cucumber Recall

SUBJECT: Recall Involving Cucumbers Served at Schools

Earlier today (5/22/2025), we were notified that cucumbers distributed to Fulton County Schools (FCS) may be part of a national recall due to possible Salmonella contamination. As soon as we received this information, we took immediate steps to remove the product from all schools and to notify families and staff directly.

We know this news may be concerning. Please know that we are acting out of an abundance of caution and are committed to keeping our community informed and safe.

What You Need to Know:

  • The FDA has issued a nationwide recall of cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales.
  • These cucumbers may have been served in school meals between May 12 and today, May 22.
  • The recall is due to the potential risk of Salmonella contamination.

What is Salmonella?

“Salmonella” is what is commonly called when you get sick with diarrhea and stomach pains from Salmonella bacteria (gastroenteritis). It’s the most common form of bacterial food poisoning in the U.S.

Symptoms to Watch For:

Symptoms typically appear 6 hours to 6 days after exposure and can last 4 to 7 days. You may experience some or all these symptoms. In some cases, infection can be more severe and require medical attention. Examples of when to seek medical attention include when symptoms persist, for high fever or bloody stools, or dehydration.

While the risk is low, please be aware of the following symptoms of Salmonella infection:

  • Diarrhea
  • Fever or chills
  • Abdominal cramps/stomach pains
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Headache

If you or your student shows symptoms, please report it to the school immediately and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.

Next Steps:

Even though today is the last day of school, FCS has removed all cucumbers from school kitchens, and we are working closely with our vendors to prevent any further distribution.

Wishing you and your family a safe and healthy summer,

Fulton County Schools
