District 7: Dr. Michelle Morancie

Dr. Michelle Morancie is a native New Yorker who now calls District 7 and Sandy Springs her home. She retired from the New York City Department of Education after 28 years as a school psychologist before moving to Georgia in 2014. She worked briefly with Fulton County Schools as a school psychologist before establishing a private practice that specializes in providing therapeutic services for women suffering from depression.

A first-generation American, Dr. Morancie was born in Brooklyn to parents who immigrated from Trinidad. They ingrained in her the value of a strong education and were strict about school attendance and pursuing college after graduation. She received a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Wesleyan University and then attended New York University where she received a master’s degree in School Psychology and a Ph.D. in Applied Psychology.

During her tenure with the NYC public schools, Dr. Morancie provided mentor services to the Psychologist-In-Training program and supervised psychologists who were preparing for state licensure. 

She has taught on the college level, having served as adjunct professor of psychology with the College of New Rochelle, Baruch and Medgar Evers Colleges of the City University of New York, and Stevens Institute of Technology. She also has facilitated court-mandated parent training workshops with the Women’s Prison Association in New York City.  

Serving others is an important part of Dr. Morancie’s life. In Brooklyn, she was a member of the Community Board for Ambulatory Care at the Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, a volunteer organizer with the American Cancer Society, and a chairperson of the Relay for Life Survivors Planning Committee. She also was the founder of Nubian Sisters Jammin’ Wit Lit, Inc., a book club and community service group.  As a new resident of Georgia, she was a NICU Baby Buddy at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where she has volunteered to hold babies in the NICU, before the pandemic brought the experience to an end. Currently, she is a mentor with the Drake House in Sandy Springs.

Dr. Morancie is a proud parent to three adult sons and one granddaughter. Her sons all attended public school in Brooklyn and have gone on to attain degrees from some of the nation’s most prestigious institutions – Harvard University, University of Delaware, and Cornell University.

Board member since 2023. Term expires on December 31, 2026.
