Interested individuals should submit – between September 18 and October 14 by 5:00 p.m.– a letter of interest outlining their qualifications and a resume:

  • via email to boardservices@fultonschools.org or;

Candidates must be age 21 or older, must reside within District 3 for at least one year (12 months), and be a Georgia resident. The maps of District 3 can be found on the FCS webpage under the Board tab under Board Resources here.  Note that District 3 includes portions of the cities of College Park, East Point, Hapeville and Sandy Springs.

According to O.C.G.A. § 20-2-51, O.C.G.A. § 20-2-10, O.C.G.A. § 20-2-54.1, and O.C.G.A. § 45-2-1, the requirements for candidates interested in filling the Board vacancy are as follows, but all legal requirements will be enforced regardless of whether they are listed here:

  • Must be a resident of District 3 (Ms. Gregory's district)

  • Must not serve on the governing body of a private elementary or secondary educational institution;
  • Must not be employed by the Board of Education;
  • Must not be employed by the Department of Education;
  • Must not serve as a member of the State Board of Education.

Relationship restrictions:

  • Must not have an immediate family member on the Board of Education;

In addition, Georgia law declares a person ineligible to hold the office of school board member if he/she is:

  • The holder of another county office.
  • The holder of any office of profit or trust under the Government of the United States (other than the position of postmaster or membership in the military reserves), except that a Board Member may accept temporary appointments to various commissions, panels, or other fact-finding or policy-making agencies appointed by the President or federal authority.
  • A holder or receiver of public money that has refused to, or failed to, account for it or pay it over when asked.

  • Of unsound mind or unable to discharge the duties of the office because of advanced age or bodily infirmity.

The School Board will interview potential candidates and make a selection so that the individual can fulfill the remaining time of Ms. Gregory’s term. The term, however, does not guarantee the candidate a future seat on the school board as they must still qualify with the Secretary of State's office and run for election.
