Legislative & Policy Priorities
COMMITTED TO OUR STUDENTS, THE COMMUNITY & OUR STAKEHOLDERS
The Fulton County Board of Education is committed to the vision that all students will learn to their full potential. To meet this vision, we petition the Fulton Legislative Delegation, the General Assembly, and the Governor to address fiscal management, educational funding, and local control issues during the 2024 legislative session. We ask lawmakers to consider the following recommendations.
FULLY FUND GEORGIA'S QUALITY BASIC EDUCATION (QBE) FORMULA
- Ensure full QBE funding so students receive the maximum resources needed for meeting their educational potential.
SECURE ADDITIONAL STATE FUNDING FOR LITERACY COACHES AND COUNSELORS
- Secure comprehensive funding for literacy coaches in every school to enhance reading and writing proficiency among students, fostering improved academic outcomes.
- Ensure ample financial support for maintaining an appropriate counselor-to-student ratio, promoting students' mental health, providing guidance, and contributing to a positive school environment.
RESERVE RESOURCES FOR DUAL ENROLLMENT
- Advocate for dedicated funding to sustain and expand dual enrollment programs, allowing high school students access to college-level and technical courses, ultimately bolstering college and career readiness.
OPPOSE EXPANSION OF VOUCHERS
- Firmly reject any proposals for the expansion of voucher programs, emphasizing the importance of preserving public education funding and accessibility for all students. Require uniform regulations for private schools receiving state funding, aligning them with public school standards. This includes adherence to standardized testing (GMAS), meeting special education requirements, and maintaining consistent public reporting practices.
LIMIT LOCAL TAX EXEMPTIONS REDUCING LOCAL AND STATE REVENUES
- Ensure local exemptions for ad valorum property taxes do not compromise the financial support essential for maintaining a high standard of education. Balancing support for seniors with fiscal responsibility is crucial for sustaining the education system.
