Business and Boasts for December 3rd, 2021

Attention freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. October PSAT results will be released to students from College Board on Monday, December 6th. Students who provided correct email addresses on their PSAT answer sheet will receive an email from College Board on December 6th or 7th with an access code. Students may then log in to College Board and sign into their account or use the access code to create an account.

Parents and students, please mark your calendar to join Applerouth Tutoring, one of our AHS business partners, for a free PSAT Scores webinar on December 8th at 7pm. Tuning in to this webinar will help parents and students understand how to interpret the PSAT score report. Applerouth representatives will also discuss the differences between the ACT and SAT and help students decide which test is a better fit.

Students, reminder that next Friday, December 10th is the deadline for Recovery opportunities on failed major assessments for the second 9 weeks of 1st semester. As a reminder, students may recover 1 major assessment per nine weeks under the current FCS grading policy.

As we come to close of this semester, please remember that Wednesday December 15th, Thursday December 16th and Friday, December 17th are scheduled as ½ days only in order to facilitate final exams. 1st and 2nd period exams are scheduled on the 15th, 3rd & 4th or 6th period classes are scheduled for Thursday and 7th and 8th period courses are scheduled for Friday. School will end at 12:30 on these dates.

Students and parents, please note that due to the current FCS grading policy, very few courses are eligible to have final exams this semester. Only semester long courses like economics, outdoor education and personal fitness will be administering final exams this semester. The majority of our courses this semester will not administer final exams. Students should verify with their teachers if a course has a 1st semester final exam. Additionally, students in those semester courses with final exams may meet criteria to exempt final exams.

Thus, the majority of our students with passing grades and no make-up or Recovery work due will not have to attend school at all December 15th 16th and 17th. Teachers have already informed students if a course has a final exam.

Because of the abrupt change in the FCS grading policy this semester, teachers and administrators have noticed that we have more students who are not passing classes. As such, we have been approved to offer a “rescue assessment” for students who are failing a course once all grades for the course have been entered. Parents, if your child is failing a course and is eligible to take the rescue assessment, you will receive an e- mail from the teacher the week of December 13th inviting your child to come to school on the final exam day of the class period your child take the course to take the rescue assessment. If your child is successful in passing that cumulative assessment, your child may earn a 70 in the course. Details regarding this process will be included in the e-mail from the teacher. Please be on the lookout for this e-mail from the teacher the week of December 13th in order to take advantage of this process.

Jolly Grams are on sale! They are 2 for $1 – send a jolly note to a friend or staff member just in time for the holidays! Sales end on Wednesday, 12/15.

Before and After School Building Access

Teachers, staff, and students, please note that official building and front office hours are from 7:30 to 4:00 each day.  As outlined before, there should be no students unattended in the building outside of those times.  The proper procedure for taking a test, attending a club, or dropping off work after school entails the teacher or staff member meeting the student at the door to allow entry.  For larger groups, we suggest designating a club or group member to attend the door with a printed list of students permitted in for meetings. Emails, notes, and passes will not suffice as they are not a guarantee that the teacher or staff member is still actually in the building.   We try to make every effort to accommodate teachers and students in this matter but recent events and safety and security reasons call for adherence to these procedures.

    Masks

Raiders, in the City of Alpharetta, the number of positive Covid cases is now less than 100 per 100,000 residents; therefore, Fulton County Schools has allowed masks to now be optional on campus for Alpharetta HS. Please note that masks must be worn on busses still because of a federal mandate. Bus drivers reported some students refusing to wear a mask this morning. Students, please know refusing to wear your mask on an FCS bus is not an option. If you ride a bus, please keep a mask with you so you may use it while riding the bus. Failure to do so would be insubordination which could lead to disciplinary consequences, and we don’t want that for any of our students.

Now that masks are optional, it is important to remember that one of our core values at AHS is Respect. Each of us now has a choice in terms of whether to wear a mask or not, and we need to respect each others’ decision. We are a diverse community with a wide range of backgrounds, and one’s decision is based on many factors that one may or may not want to share with others. Thank you in advance for respecting your fellow Raiders. If you have any issue related to optional mask wearing, please reach out to your teacher or your administrator for guidance and support.

  • Special Message 10-24-21

    10/24/2021

    Raiders,

Please read important communication below from Fulton County Schools regarding potential change to Covid-19 protocols:

Based on the latest Fulton County Board of Health Epidemiology report and in alignment with the Fulton County Schools Mitigation Matrix, staff is monitoring and preparing for a continued decrease in the case per 100,000 spread. The latest Epidemiology report on October 22, 2021 is the first report to show that our municipality, and therefore Alpharetta High School, is below 100 cases per 100,000. This means that if a second report reflects a rate below 100, we will go to a mask optional learning environment and normal visitor protocols. During this time, masks will be highly encouraged as a COVID-19 mitigation practice.

I will update our AHS school community as soon as I receive updated information from our district leaders once another Epidemiology report is published this week.

    With Raider Pride,

    Shannon N. Kersey
