Counseling Mission Statement

  • The mission of the Counseling Department is to build a comprehensive developmental counseling program addressing the academic, career, and personal/social development of all students. Programs developed by the Counseling Department will be driven by the unique ethnic, cultural, and economic diversity of the entire student population with the end goal of removing barriers to student learning and encouraging achievement at the highest level for each student. Through a partnership with students, educators, parents, and the community, the  Counseling Department will prepare students academically and socially to be productive members and leaders of society.

    GCIS
     
    This website includes interest inventories that students complete to help
    them think about their careers and to meet the requirements of the BRIDGE law.
    The 8th grade students will use this site to complete their high school graduation
    plan.
     
    Signs of Suicide (SOS) training
     
    This training is for 6th grade students to explain the
    potential risk of suicide and the process to get help. Parents that wish to have
    their child not participate in the training should return the form that is sent home
    with students before the training.
     
    AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program
     
    AVID is a college readiness
    program that changes lives by helping schools shift to a more equitable, student-centered
    approach. The purpose is to close the opportunity gap, so the school can prepare all students
    for college, careers, and life. The program places special emphasis on growing writing, critical
    thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills. We currently offer this program to our 6th
    grade students only.
     
    Career Day

    How Parents Can Help Their Middle and/or High School Child
     
     
    In middle and high school young people are developing emotionally, intellectually, and physically. Parents can help their children be successful students by encouraging them in the following ways:

    • Create a quiet space for homework to be completed. A place free from disruption and fully stocked with supplies (pencils, pens, paper, stapler, tape, calculator, etc.) is ideal.
    • Communicate with students about their homework, and upcoming projects and tests.
    • Keep a family routine concerning dinner, homework, computer time, and TV.
    • Remember that intrinsic motivation leads to greater creativity. Allow students to try a variety of activities in order to find their true interests.
    • Encourage students to keep trying when faced with a challenge. Remind students that parents and teachers are available to provide extra help.
    • Encourage children to read if they want to improve their scores on standardized tests. The best way to improve reading comprehension and vocabulary is to read a lot.
    • Allow adolescents some freedom yet, stay involved in their lives. We all learn through experience and sometimes failure is the best teacher.
    • Praise adolescents for their contributions to family, school, and community. This conveys a belief in their accomplishments and helps to build a positive self-image.
