  • Greetings family and friends of College Park Elementary,

    I hope all is well with you and your family. My name is Dr. Alvin Sutherland, Jr. and I am extremely excited in welcoming you to this school year.  As the Professional School Counselor here at College Park, it will be my pleasure to offer support to you and your child in many capacities that will hopefully enhance their academic, social, and emotional growth. My extensive educational background has provided me the knowledge required to assist your child and will provide you with as much support as necessary in ensuring a well-rounded academic year. I began as a professional school counselor in Fulton County at Paul D. West MS in 2002. During this time I have had the pleasure of implementing and managing programs meant to increase the potential of students to ensure their continued success not only in school but in life.  

    I am a National Board Certified Counselor (NBCC), a National Board Certified School Counselor (NBCSC),  and a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). I am an alumnus of West Georgia College where I received my Bachelors of Science Degree in Recreation Therapy and my Masters of Education Degree in Guidance and Counseling. I played and later coached football while attending West Georgia. I earned my Doctor of Education Degree in Counseling Psychology from Argosy University. My favorite color is blue, my birthday is August 30th, I am a huge Denver Broncos fan. I enjoy riding my motorcycle, reading, playing tennis, and spending time with my family and friends. Please come and give me a firm handshake when you see me.

    Belief Statement: The educating of students is a shared responsibility between (parent, student, community and school). 

    The mission of The Counseling Center is to improve the overall quality of living and learning for the students, staff, and parents by inspiring and teaching them to make healthier academic and behavioral choices.

    The vision of The Counseling Center is to be the paramount school counseling provider of empowering and inspiring programs and services that enhance the academic and behavioral performance of all students. We aim to do this by inspiring and teaching students skills for everyday living to be college, career, and life ready.

    The beliefs of The Counseling Center are effective communication, shared responsibility (parent, student, community and school), consistency, the importance of being a positive role model and giving your best to be your best.

    The counseling center's focus is to advance career development and to enhance the appropriate and healthy interactions of our students. Students will participate in lessons about the importance of Gathering All The Stones  "G. A. T. S." of education, how to tie a tie, making healthy choices and decisions, healthy expressions of anger, empathy, time management, 7 Habits of Happy Kids, gun safety, conflict resolution, the art of listening, respect, career awareness, kindness, attitude, (Friend or foe do you know) and transition to middle school. 
     
    Program Goal 1:  By May 22, 2020, 90% of the 5th-grade students will demonstrate accurate awareness (rating of 5+), on the Seven Habits post-self-awareness evaluation.

    Program Goal 2: By May 22, 2020, decrease the number of students that miss 10 or more days during the SY 2018 - 2019 by 10 percentage points 31.9% to 21.9% for the SY 2019 - 2020.


    Fulton County Schools (FCS) mission is to educate every student to be a responsible, productive citizen. College Park's mission is to build relationships with family and community. It is vital that students are able to interact with their peers and with adults in a healthy way to meet the school's and district's mission.

Counseling Services

  • My primary role as a professional school counselor focuses on the core curriculum. The delivery of this model will occur through scheduled classroom lessons. The focus of these lessons will center on building and maintaining the “whole” child and offers assistance in reaching personal, academic, social/emotional and career goals. In cases where students require a more personal perspective, individual guidance will be available through a referral process completed by teachers, parents as well as the student themselves. Group guidance will also be provided for identified small groups of students on an as-needed basis.

    Individual Guidance
    Seeks to assist the student in the art of problem-solving inside and outside of the classroom.

    Group Guidance
    Provides resolution to groups of students who share a common bond or problem.  Students will work toward achieving a common goal together over a specified time period.
