Program Goals
Every student of World Languages in Fulton County Schools works toward attaining a particular level of proficiency, or skill, in the language.
- Novice proficiency is for Level 1 students who start with words and phrases, then progress to communicating in simple sentences across familiar topics.
- Intermediate proficiency is for Level 2 through 4 students who expand to connected sentences using content they have created.
- Advanced proficiency is evidenced by passing either the Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) exam at a high level.
Proficiency Targets have been identified for all languages and levels. They may be found HERE.
Students who attain a proficiency level of Intermediate-High, and earn a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or better across all four English Language Arts (ELA) courses required for graduation, may earn the Georgia Seal of Biliteracy upon graduation, receiving a seal for their diploma and an honors cord for their graduation ceremony. The Seal of Biliteracy program is managed by individual high schools.
Students who complete specified coursework, extra-curricular activities, community service and a Capstone project may earn the International Skills Diploma Seal upon graduation, receiving a seal for their diploma and an honors cord for their graduation ceremony.
Students who earn three high school credits in the same language, including credits earned at the middle school level, will earn the World Languages Pathway Completion receiving an honors cord for their graduation ceremony.
In order to support students in their path to proficiency, World Languages teachers deliver instruction using the target language for the majority of class time. The expectation for target language use is 90% of everything students hear, read, write, view and say in the classroom.
