Program Goals

Every student of World Languages in Fulton County Schools works toward attaining a particular level of proficiency, or skill, in the language.  Students begin at the Novice proficiency level, continue through the Intermediate proficiency level, and may attain an Advanced level of proficiency as a result of passing either the Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) exam at a high level.  Proficiency targets have been identified for all languages and levels.  They may be found HERE

Students who attain a proficiency level of Intermediate-High, and earn a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or better across all four English Language Arts (ELA) courses required for graduation, may earn the Georgia Seal of Biliteracy upon graduation, receiving a seal for their diploma and an honors cord for the graduation ceremony.  The Seal of Biliteracy program is managed by individual high schools.

Students who complete specified coursework, community service and a Capstone project may earn the International Skills Diploma Seal upon graduation, receiving a seal for their diploma and an honors cord for the graduation ceremony.

In order to support students in their path to proficiency, World Languages teachers deliver instruction using the target language for the majority of class time.  The expectation for target language use is 90% of everything students hear, read, write, view and say in the classroom.
