What is the ESOL Program?
-
The English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program is offered to all English learners in Fulton schools who meet the eligibility criteria set by the Georgia Department of Education. The goal of the ESOL program is for students to become proficient in the five language areas of speaking, listening, reading, writing and comprehension and to communicate successfully in both social and academic settings. The ESOL program aids the success of English learners’ immersed in an English-speaking classroom by addressing these essential language skills while building an understanding of American culture. This empowers learners to function effectively and productively in school and home environments. Guidance and support from ESOL teachers paired with accommodations provided by all school personnel provide the methods to accomplish this goal. The Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GAPSC) requires ESOL teachers to complete a certification program and to hold an ESOL endorsement beyond their content area certification. ESOL classes are limited to the maximum size specified by Fulton County in compliance with State Board of Education Rule 160-5-1-.08 Class Size. ESOL services in Fulton County may be provided through the following approved delivery models: sheltered content courses, push-in content courses, and/or scheduled ESOL classes.
