Information for rising 9th grade students
Welcome to Freshman Transition Night!
Balancing Act
What's next?
-
Now that you have an overview, it's time to explore your student's options! Our teachers have created videos for many of the advanced and elective courses here at Alpharetta High School. To help you explore, they are grouped together by subject area. The department chair for each subject has also created an overview of the classes in that department so that you can learn more about how the courses fit together for next year (and beyond). Use the links below to see what each department offers to our students!
We have many other classes not featured in videos, so browse the AHS Rising-Freshman course catalog to discover even more opportunities. This course catalog has been specifically curated to highlight those courses uniquely offered for our rising-9th grade students. It also contains valuable information about AHS's "Success Indicators" - criteria that our teachers have developed to help students understand the potential challenge they may encounter based upon how they have done in prior courses.

Getting Involved
Link Crew
-
Link Crew is a high school transition program that welcomes freshmen and makes them feel comfortable throughout the first year of their high school experience. Built on the belief that students can help students succeed, Boomerang Project’s proven high school transition program trains mentors from your junior and senior classes to be Link Crew Leaders. As positive role models, Link Crew Leaders are mentors and student leaders who guide the freshmen to discover what it takes to be successful during the transition to high school and help facilitate freshman success.
More and more studies show that if students have a positive experience their first year in high school, their chance for success increases dramatically. Link Crew provides the structure for freshmen to receive support and guidance from juniors and seniors who have been through the challenges that high school poses and understand that the transition to a larger school can sometimes be overwhelming.
What Orientation Looks Like
Link Crew kicks off the school year with a fun filled and educational orientation day that welcomes your transitioning freshmen into your school with a sense of safety in a high spirited, all inclusive, anti-bullying environment. Freshmen are personally invited to attend the orientation by a junior or senior Link Crew Leader who spends the day with them and mentors them throughout their first year of high school.
Link Crew is a Yearlong Program
Link Crew is more than just a one-day event. It is a structured high school transition program that provides mentoring and character development spanning an entire year at your high school. The Link Crew Leaders not only help organize and guide the freshmen through orientation day, but they also help to facilitate a smooth transition both socially and academically throughout the year.
Planning for Future Opportunities
International Baccalaureate
-
In 2014, Alpharetta High School began to the process of working toward authorization as an International Baccalaureate World School offering the Diploma Programme, a distinction that was awarded in February 2018. Students will be able to take the Diploma Programme at the school, with the first cohort commencing their studies in August 2018.
The IB has a positive impact on students, schools and their wider communities with learning going well beyond the classroom. Its unique and innovative approach to learning means both students and teachers are genuinely engaged with the programs and benefit from being a part of an unparalleled global network. Students are able to participate in international conferences and educators work with their peers internationally to ensure that the IB remains at the cutting edge of international education.
Although students can't begin their IB coursework until 11th grade, interested students should develop a plan early to maximize their options when it comes time to choose IB courses. Learn more by exploring all of our IB courses and visit the school's IB web page to schedule a meeting with our IB Coordinator.
