    Occupation: Assistant Principal

Bio: An educator for twenty-two years, Mr. Sylvester Zarzana, “Sal,” begins his tenth year as an assistant principal, four of which he spent at Roswell High School.

After graduating from Hofstra University with an MBA in marketing, Mr. Zarzana accepted an opportunity to teach English Language Arts and coach basketball, tennis, and soccer at LaSalle High School in Coconut Grove, Florida, during which time he earned an MSE in English Education.  After three years at Lasalle, he spent two years teaching and coaching in the Florida Keys at Marathon High School, and then moved up the state for three years to teach and coach Coral Springs High School, where he earned his National Board of Professional Standards certification as Early Adolescent Academic Generalist.  In 2000, Mr. Zarzana moved to Roswell, where he taught English at Centennial High School up until 2003 when he accepted his first assistant principal position at Roswell High School.

Mr. Zarzana left Roswell High School in 2006 to work as curriculum assistant principal of feeder school Elkins Pointe Middle.  He worked there until 2011, helping to establish a standards-based, direct instruction approach in which teachers participated in content-based collaboration and used data from common assessments to inform their instruction.  In 2011, Elkins Pointe Middle School was the only middle school in Fulton County to receive the Platinum Award distinction for greatest gains in student achievement.
