Text Box: Haynes Bridge Middle School

Step Up to New Adventures in Middle School

New Teachers.  New Subjects.  New Rules.  New Friends

BASICS:  Middle school has 8 periods a day.  First period starts at 8:30. Announcements are read giving any special instructions for the day.  1st—5th periods are your academics  (with lunch during 4th period).  Then 6th and 7th periods are your connections.  At the end of 7th period sixth graders return to their homerooms to be dismissed at 3:30.

ACADEMICS:  All 6th grade students take five 50 minute academic classes: math, language arts, reading or continuing Spanish, earth science and social studies.     The academic classes for rising sixth grade students are determined by the fifth grade teacher using three criteria: a student’s grade (performance), ITBS scores, and teacher recommendation.  A student cannot choose an advanced class, but may elect not to take one if recommended.

CONNECTIONS: For 6th graders, Connections classes are at the end of the day.  There are two 50 minute classes that change every nine weeks. The purpose is to provide exposure to a variety of courses to identify interests and skills.  Examples are: Art, Computer Literacy, Diversified Technology, Consumer and Family Science, General Music, Health and Physical Education.  Band, Orchestra, and Chorus are taken the full year if chosen.

AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES:  There are several extra-curricular  activities for sixth graders.  Some examples this year are: Skateboard  Club, Green Club (Recycling) Chess Club, Online Club, Academic Bowl and, of course, Intramurals which change seasonally.  Student Council which is an elected position from your homeroom also meets every week.  Activities are always being added depending on interest, so be sure to get involved.
