In addition to sight-reading a Lyrical and Technical exercise, string students must play
two prepared excerpts (see All-State Excerpts). No scales are required at the Final Audition.
PROCEDURE:
• There will be three registrars - one for Middle School students, one for 9-10 High
School students, and onefor 11-12 High School students.
• Students will sight-read two selections, one Lyrical and one Technical. Each panel will
be provided fourcopies of the sight-reading material; one for each adjudicator, one for the
monitor, and one for the student.
• The Middle and High School Organizing Chairpersons and the State Orchestra Chair
will not serve on any adjudication panel.
• The prepared excerpts for the Final Audition will be chosen by the State Orchestra
Chair and will be posted at the audition. The orchestral excerpts are on the website (www.gmea.org)
under the “orchestra” link or can be obtained from the district orchestra chair, or by sending a
self-addressed
stamped envelope with 74 cents postage to James Barket, Webb Bridge Middle
School,
Alpharetta, Georgia 30005. Please be certain to specify the exact excerpts
needed.
It is suggested
that each director obtain copies of those needed well in advance of the Final
Audition so
that the students can have adequate time to learn the required excerpts. It is
the responsibility of
each individual director to see that his students are supplied with the CORRECT
musical material.
The prepared excerpt need not be memorized, and is to be played without accompaniment.

Instrumental Final Audition On-Site Procedure
Students who were exempt from the District Audition, and students scoring 55 points or higher at
the District Audition, will receive a registration time from the State Orchestra Chair, mailed to
each student’s director or teacher. Students will receive an audition time at the registration desk
at the time of the Final Audition. An adequate amount of warm-up time will be provided between
registration and audition.
A system of a screen and student identification numbers will be utilized so that the identity of the
auditioning student is not known to the two auditioners. The rationale is to help remove all doubts
as to preferential treatment, and to maintain student anonymity.
All students will play in their designated time slot unless prior permission has been arranged by
the Organizing Chairperson to change the time.
Students will be assigned a number when they register. Directors may register their students in
a group.
In addition to the two auditioners in the audition room, a monitor will be available to give
directions, set tempos, and handle all communication with the student.
There will be no communication between the student and the two auditioners.
GMEA members designated as tabulators are responsible for ranking students, using the
students’ number instead of a name.
No scores will be posted. Audition results will be sent to all directors of participants.
Throughout the day, at regular intervals, the adjudicators/monitor will provide the runners with
completed adjudication forms for the tabulators to use for data entry. All audition materials,
including any completed adjudication forms not already sent to the tabulators, and the sight
reading music, will be returned to the appropriate Organizing Chairperson at the end of the
audition day.
The Organizing Chairperson and Division Chair will match the identification numbers with the
student’s name in the presence of other GMEA members, and a personnel list will be developed.
String selection procedure (Final Auditions are also chair auditions).
The middle school orchestra is a string orchestra while the 9-10 and 11-12 orchestras are full
orchestras. The seating procedure for all three orchestras is as follows: The four highest ranked
violinists will be assigned to the 1st Violin section. The fifth ranked is assigned Principal 2nd Violin.
Thereafter, every third ranked player is placed in the 2nd Violin section until the 1st Violin section is
completed. All remaining violinists will be placed in the 2nd Violin section.
VIOLIN I = 1-4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 19, 21, 22, 24, 25, 27, 28, 30, 31
VIOLIN II = 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, 29, 32-44
VIOLA and CELLO = the first 16 in rank order.
BASS = the first 8 in rank order
After the string list has been completed, each organizing chair will contact their Band Division
counterpart to receive a list of wind and percussion players assigned to each orchestra.
Acceptance forms, music and other information are mailed to the directors by the GMEA office.
Student Acceptance and Participation
Students who qualify and who accept membership in an All-State Group will remit the
participation fee listed on the GMEA Acceptance Form through their school music teacher. All-
State Acceptance Forms and fees are to be mailed to the GMEA office by the postmark deadline.
NOTE: All students should bring a folding, portable music stand, which will be used in all
rehearsals and in the final performance.
After acceptances are in, the appropriate Orchestra Organizing Chairpersons call in alternates
as needed.
A student who decides not to participate, after being selected to participate in an instrumental
All-State group (for reasons other than health or death in the immediate family), shall not be
allowed to audition or participate in All-State the following year. The school principal shall be
apprised of this fact immediately.
All-State Performance Music
The All-State Organizing Chairs, through GMEA, will purchase the All-State instrumental music.
Orchestra parts will be mailed in advance to all players. All parts will be collected immediately
after the orchestra’s All-State performance.
