Students lend a helping hand to Haiti

Oak Knoll Elementary School

Oak Knoll Elementary School celebrated 100 days of school on January 21 by asking every student to bring in 100 pennies for earthquake relief in Haiti. Students collected more than $1,000 to donate to CARE, an Atlanta-based organization that is providing help to earthquake survivors. Kaitlyn Hercik’s third grade class collected more than any other class by donating $162.41.

 

Summit Hill Elementary School

Students at Summit Hill Elementary School showed their compassion for the people of Haiti by raising funds and donating needed items. Students raised money by competing with physical education teacher, Rick Johnson. Johnson pledged to match any student’s donation that beat him in a performance exercise. So far, students have raised more than $400 dollars.

Conley Hills Elementary School

Hills Elementary School
is raising money for the Haitian Relief Fund. The school set a goal of $500 by February 19. However, Conley Hills has already surpassed that goal and continues to open its hearts and purse strings.

Northview High School

The school has donated to The Haitian Alliance, a community-based organization in Atlanta. A doctor who recently returned from Haiti personally came to collect donations, which included canned food, clothing, shoes, first aid items, bottled water, diapers, and personal hygiene items. In addition, different student groups raised $2,800 for CARE, Partners in Health, and the American Red Cross.

 

Hamilton E. Holmes Elementary School
In a “WE ARE ONE” fundraiser, students at Hamilton E. Holmes Elementary School recently showed their compassion by raising $1,159.32 in just eight days.  The check was presented to Fabiola Charles from the American Red Cross on February 2.


Crabapple Middle School
 

Crabapple Middle School raised more than $3,100 to help those in Haiti. The donation is being given to the Rotary Club for purchasing three Shelter Boxes, valued at $1,000 each, for families in Haiti. The Student Council and Jr. Beta clubs at the school were in charge of collecting and raising money at the carpool lane and at a candy stand.


Woodland
Middle School

Woodland Middle School began a relief drive and each student was asked to donate $1 each so that the goal of $1,044 – the school’s current enrollment – could be reached. However, with the support from faculty and staff, students exceeded this amount and raised $2,544 for the Hosea Feed the Hungry Fund for Haiti. A representative from Hosea Feed the Hungry came to Woodland to accept the donation and was featured on the school’s morning news broadcast, W-ASTV.  A video of the presentation can be viewed on the Woodland Middle School web site.

 

Harriet Tubman Elementary School

The families of Harriet Tubman Elementary were touched by the catastrophic earthquake that hit the small country of Haiti. In connection with the school's "No Place For Hate" campaign, students wanted to pull together and outwardly express love for their neighbors. Each class was given a can to collect change for two weeks. Also, TAG teacher LaShon Campbell, fourth grade teacher Shaikara Adams and fifth grade teacher Robert Jackson helped students created a public service announcement to run on the school's closed circuit TV network. At the end of the campaign, students collected more than $600 to be donated to the aid of our brothers and sisters in Haiti.

 

Dunwoody Springs Charter Elementary School
Dunwoody Springs students showed their support for the Haitian people after the devastating earthquake. Led by the Student Council, funds were raised by “Collecting Coins for Haiti” where students were asked to contribute coins or loose change for relief efforts. In less than two weeks, more than $900 was raised to donate to Helping Hands for Haiti, a non-profit organization.

 

Evoline C. West Elementary School

Evoline C. West Elementary School sponsored a schoolwide donation drive for Haiti from January 15-31. Girl Scout troop # 10749 led the effort by making posters and decorated boxes, and students, teachers and staff showed their support by donating medical supplies, water, canned goods and clothing. More than $500 was raised within two weeks to donate to the American Red Cross’  “Dollars for Disaster Relief” program.

 

Banneker High School

Banneker High School’s Junior Council spearheaded a “SKAITI” (Skate for Haiti) event at a local skating rink. Students were able to skate for a donation of $5 and the school raised $700 dollars at the event. The Junior Council elected to send the money to Wyclef Jean's  Yéle Haiti.Earthquake Fund. In addition, Banneker’s faculty and students donated another $900 directly to the American Red Cross.

 

Holcomb Bridge Middle School
After following the natural disaster in Haiti, Port-au-Prince, Haiti native and Holcomb Bridge Middle School eighth-grader, Angeline Mondesir, wanted to help. On February 1, Angeline and Holcomb Bridge Middle School's English to Speakers of Other Languages Department organized a bake sale. The community joined hands to donate and purchase treats to sell, and students raised over $1,000 to benefit disaster victims in Haiti

 

Dolvin Elementary School

Dolvin Elementary School has worked hard to raise funds to help heal Haiti. Led by the Student Council, students and staff collected donations during the week of February 1-5.  By then end of the week, the Student Council representatives were able to present a check for $5, 817.07 to a local American Red Cross representative to support the work the Red Cross is doing to help heal Haiti.

Crossroads/Second Chance North
Crossroads/Second Chance North’s Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) held a Valentine's Day fund raiser for the victims of Haiti. Students used their marketing and advertising skills to raise money for the survivors of this tragic disaster. The fund raiser was titled "We Heart Haiti." Using Valentine's Day as an additional motivation to give, the students solicited and marketed sweetheart items, such as candy bags, flowers, teddy bear baskets, chocolates, brownies and personalized greeting cards. All of these items were donated by the families, faculty and staff at Crossroads/Second Chance North and the proceeds from the "We Heart Haiti" fundraiser were donated to The American Red Cross.

Campbell Elementary School
Campbell Elementary recently completed a fund raising drive called Operation: Help Haiti. It began on February 2 with an assembly for the entire school. The students learned about earthquakes and about Haiti in a PowerPoint produced by teacher Amber Barnes. They also learned to speak some Haitian phrases from Lisa Paulycarpe, and they heard an original poem about the history of Haiti written by Patrice Benton-Manggrum. The students immediately began bringing in money to purchase water for the victims of the earthquake, and the staff held a silent auction to buy new French books for the Haitian schools. When all the pennies and dollars were counted, the students raised $1,675, which should pay for at least 335 cases of water. The silent auction brought in $330 to buy at least 45 books. Operation: Help Haiti was declared a success as Campbell Elementary is sending more than $2,000 to Haiti. 

State Bridge Crossing Elementary School
State
Bridge Crossing Elementary School's Student Council is very thankful for the outpouring of support during the two-week "Have a Heart for Haiti" relief effort.  Pink, purple and red hearts could be seen outside every SBCE classroom.  To date, the school was able to raise $3,654.67 to donate to the American Red Cross for the relief efforts in HaitiSpecial thanks go to two terrific parent volunteers, Mrs. Goss and Mrs. Lydic, who brought this effort to fruition and worked hard to make it a success. Congratulations also to the top two classes that won the pizza party for raising the most amount of money. Ms. Miller’s second grade class won for PreK-2nd grade by raising $149.29 and Ms. Corkern’s third grade class won for 3rd-5th grade by raising $322.03.

Fulton County Schools' Operational Planning Department
The school system's Operational Planning Department, along with a few others from the Administrative Center, raised $1,000 for Lauren Blake's trip to Haiti in May. Blake, who is the department's professional assistant, is heading to the country with her church to volunteer.

Love T. Nolan Elementary School

The school’s Beta Club and Student Council sponsored a project to collect toiletry and medicinal items for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.  As a result of their effort, the Love T. Nolan family/community collected over $1,500 worth of supplies. Joe Beasley from the Operation PUSH Coalition (founded by Jessie Jackson) and a Haitian representative came to the school to meet the Beta Club/Student Council members, principal, and sponsors, and to receive the items collected.  After the meet-and-greet, they shared information regarding the current status, thanked the school for the donations, and assured that they will send back pictures.

 

Manning Oaks Elementary School

Manning Oaks’ National Elementary Honor Society raised $560.72 for the Haiti Relief Fund by asking students to donate their pennies. This was one of several recent efforts by the school’s newly formed club that involves students in caring for one another and the world around them.

 

North Springs Charter High School

North Springs Charter High Schools' Student Government Association (SGA) has presented the American Red Cross with a check for $1,200. The money was collected by students in one week to help the earthquake victims in Haiti. The school also is asking patrons of the arts who are attending "The Producers," North Springs' spring musical, to bring donations of used medical supplies, such as crutches, walkers or ambulatory boots, with them to the show.

Mountain Park Elementary School
Mountain Park Elementary raised more than $2,700 dollars for the relief efforts.  The money was contributed to Rotary International to fund shelter boxes. Additionally, students collected more than $900 for the people of Haiti.

Alpharetta High School
Every club and team and organization has pledged to raise a minimum of $50 for the American Red Cross. With more than 130 teams and clubs, the school is hoping to raise $5000-$10,000.  In addition, the school's Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra held a Haiti Earthquake Relief Concert on January 26. They collected more than $1,100 towards earthquake relief.

Creek View Elementary School
Students and staff are holding a “Hats for Haiti” fund raiser where they will bring in a suggested donation of $1.00 or $2.00, since that is similar to the daily wage for a day of work in Haiti. All money collected goes to the American Red Cross. 

Webb Bridge Middle School

The Red Cross Club, POP (Power over Prejudice) group, and the choral council have all decided to raise money for the American Red Cross by holding Hat Day fund raisers and donating proceeds from a talent show. In addition, they sold POP merchandise and the profits from that will go to the Red Cross.

 

River Trail Middle School

The school is holding a weeklong "Hope for Haiti" drive during Feb. 1-5. Efforts include collecting money and raising awareness, with different events each day, such as hearts, hats and H2O – all keeping the "H" theme.

 

Manning Oaks Elementary School

Students are beginning an organized relief effort and faculty are receiving weeklong “jeans passes” in exchange for a $10 minimum to the cause.

 

Ocee Elementary School
The school’s Peacekeepers, a student group dedicated to help students relate positively to each other with peer mediation strategies, is sponsoring a special collection.

 

Lake Windward Elementary School
Students collected supplies, such as medical, clothes and water, to send to Haiti when there was free postage offered by UPS for boxes up to 50 lbs. The school sent several boxes to Haiti.  They are now taking up a collection for the Red Cross and one parent's business has pledged to match the donated funds.

 

Chattahoochee High School

Students and staff have raised approximately $3,000 for the American Red Cross.

 

Bethune Elementary School

During the month of January, Bethune Elementary staff and students were drawn to help families in Haiti that were devastated by the recent earthquakes. As result, a massive water campaign was set in motion. Staff members were asked to contribute two cases of water and each student was asked to donate one case. On February 5, the CEO of Global Peace Containers, Soren Ludwig, sent representatives to receive Bethune’s donation. In total, 302 cases – which is 7,248 bottles – will be shipped to the families of Haiti.
