Adults aren’t the only ones standing in long lines to cast their ballots this year. Schools throughout Fulton County are hosting mock presidential elections to learn about the electoral process and how to practice good citizenship.
While all schools have special lessons tied to the national election, students at Mimosa Elementary School and Palmetto Elementary School have already cast their ballots. Mimosa participated in the National Student/Parent Mock Election, a democracy program that helps students understand power of their ballot by actually involving them in a full-fledged election. When Palmetto students were asked who the big winner would be, they replied in unison, "democracy." Good answer, indeed.
In addition, students at Bethune Elementary School and Woodland Charter Elementary School, shown here, are preparing for the polls. Both schools are using a state-of-the-art electronic voting system as they participate in a mock election program sponsored by the Youth Leadership Initiative, a program based at the University of Virginia Center for Politics. More than one million students nationwide are expected to vote through the Youth Leadership Initiative.
Middle school students also are practicing democracy. At Autrey Mill Middle School, students conducted an online mock election. Before casting their electronic ballot, students first explained how the electoral process works.
