Crossroads/Second Chance North hosted a grand opening ceremony for its recently completed community greenhouse. Students from the Crossroads/Second Chance program as well as parents, school leaders and community guests helped celebrate the greenhouse construction which was funded by a $100,000 grant from State Farm. The event also unveiled the school’s 2009 Service Learning Plan that includes more than 30 dynamic new partnerships.
Conceptionally designed through a partnership with Westwood College, the greenhouse will now allow a practical setting for students to earn "Learn and Serve" community service hours. Students are required to earn 20 hours per semester. As the project matures, students will practice additional lifeskills, such as horticulture, marketing, accounting and entrepreneurship.
