Woodland Elementary Charter School and the revived not-for-profit foundation, The Friends of Woodland, have reason to celebrate. On September 24, school administrators, teachers and families gathered for an official ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil a new playground. The ceremony was followed by Principal Ruth Baskerville’s State of the School address.
Over the summer, the school community identified that pre-k, kindergarten and first-grade children needed a new playground. Understanding that taxpayer money may not be used for some school improvement projects, Sandy Springs City Councilwoman Ashley Jenkins kick-started an energetic, fundraising campaign. Together with Woodland’s administration, Jenkins motivated families and the Sandy Springs business community to donate money quickly so children would have a new place to play just one month after school started.
In addition to the playground, the Friends of Woodland foundation is holding a fund raising campaign through October 9 to raise money for additional projects, including:
· Four-square courts
· Tricycle path for special needs students
· Picnic tables, benches and landscaping
· Second grade through fifth grade play area upgrades
· Cafeteria tables
· 21st Century instructional equipment (electronic whiteboards)
