Schools awarded grant funds

In these difficult economic times, schools are seeking resources wherever possible. The district, as well as the following schools, has received grant funding that will help supplement special projects benefiting students.

The Fulton County School System has a grant partnership with Upward Bound to provide students opportunities to prepare for college. The grant currently benefits 58 Fulton County students through the Synergistic Youth Enterprises program at Clayton State University and an additional 85 students through Atlanta Metropolitan College. The grants provide fundamental support in college preparation. This supports Upward Bound’s goal to increase the rate at which students complete secondary school and postsecondary education.   

Crabapple Crossing Elementary School, Northwestern Middle School and Summit Hill Elementary School
The Georgia Department of Transportation awarded the City of Milton a Safe Routes to School grant totaling $496,275. Funding from this grant will support infrastructure projects at Crabapple Crossing Elementary School, Northwestern Middle School and Summit Hill Elementary School. The grant is managed by the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Crabapple Middle School
Crabapple Middle School has been named an Intel Schools of Distinction finalist in mathematics excellence. It is one of 18 schools across the U.S. to receive this honor. Intel recognizes schools that demonstrate 21st century teaching and learning environments and implement innovative programs that inspire students to excel in math and science. Finalists receive a $2,500 grant.

Medlock Bridge Elementary School and Mount Olive Elementary School
Dollar General has awarded Back to School Grants to Medlock Bridge Elementary School and Mount Olive Elementary SchoolMedlock Bridge received $4,875 for technology and the knowledge and use of internet resources within the media center. Mount Olive received $5,000 to conduct an author study program and to purchase additional books for the media center.

Love T. Nolan Elementary School, Liberty Point Elementary School and Conley Hills Elementary School
Love T. Nolan Elementary School, Liberty Point Elementary School and Conley Hills Elementary School each received a Resource Grant for an eBook Site License from Sylvan Dell Publishing. The license is good through June 2010 and includes educator resources, teaching activities and audio books. Materials have been aligned to standards in all 50 states.

Woodland Middle School
Sprint has awarded Woodland Middle School a $5,000 Character Education Program Grant. The winning grant application was titled “PeaceJam” and focuses on community involvement.

The school also received the Nike/Jordan Fundamentals Grant through The Boston Foundation. The $5,000 grant was awarded to the school’s Exceptional Education Department to provide a mini-computer lab for students with disabilities. The mini-lab will enable students to have increased access to technology in the classroom on a daily basis.
