Nine Fulton County schools were honored over the summer at the fourth annual Healthy Schools Program Forum in New York. Randolph Elementary School, Campbell Elementary School, Evoline C. West Elementary School, Liberty Point Elementary School, Palmetto Elementary School, Renaissance Elementary School, Seaborn Lee Elementary School, Sandtown Middle School and Frank McClarin High School all received bronze awards at the celebration. In addition, Jacob Weiers, physical education teacher at Liberty Point Elementary, was presented the Healthy Schools Program Champion Award.
The Healthy Schools Program takes a comprehensive approach to helping schools create healthier environments by working with them to improve access to healthier foods; increase physical activity opportunities before, during and after school; enhance nutrition education; and establish school employee wellness programs. Support is tailored so that every school creates its own local approach that matches the specific needs of its community.
The forum recognized 114 schools across the nation – including the nine from Fulton County – for taking positive steps toward becoming healthier places for students and staff. Keynote speakers included former President Bill Clinton, whose non-profit organization, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, is a major sponsor of the initiative.
