Sweet Apple Reading Success has “Gone to the Dogs” – literally. Sweet Apple has two furry, four-legged friends who come every Friday to listen to students read and work on math skills. They are Daisy, a 150 pound Newfoundland, owned by Cathy Aubly and Bromley, a 160 pound Leonberger, owned by Wick Fairbanks. They belong to the R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dogs) organization and completed training to go to schools, nursing homes and hospitals to provide friendship and assistance. You can imagine the reaction of the students as Daisy and Bromley walk down the hall on Friday morning. You should also see the excitement on the faces and in the wagging tails of Bromley and Daisy as they come to work. They obviously know that they have a very important job to do and are eager to get busy. Sweet Apple feels very fortunate to have two wonderful friends who are willing to share their love for reading with our students.

The Sweet Apple Fall Carnival was held on Sunday, October 7th and once again was a huge success. Children from Sweet Apple as well as surrounding schools enjoyed a wide variety of games, food and fun. A favorite this year was the Jail where teachers, parents and students had to spend a little time waiting to be bailed out. Another yearly favorite was the silent auction where students and their parents bid on items including time spent with teachers and getting to be “Principal for a Day”. The Sweet Apple Carnival is always a great success thanks to the many hours spent by the PTA committee members planning and organizing each event and the parent and teacher volunteers.

We had two glorious days at Rock Eagle. We learned how to read a compass and put “Red in the shed.” The challenge course was fantastic! We were given a lot of problems and had to work together to solve them. The highlight was herpetology. We were introduced to various amphibians and got to hold turtles and snakes. The soft shell turtle was amazing. At night we had the Sweet Apple version of a horse race. The campfire was amazing! We all loved cabin time. Rock Eagle was the trip of a lifetime!
A “Sneak Peak” at Sweet Apple Elementary School
New kindergarten students and their parents participated in a special “Sneak Peek” afternoon. Each student went to their new classroom where parents completed paperwork and signed up to volunteer and the students had the opportunity to look around their new classroom to get familiar with all the exciting things in their class. Later, parents were invited back for a special power point presentation given by the kindergarten teachers. The presentation focused on the kindergarten curriculum and highlighted the new math and science curriculum programs. “Sneak Peek” helps ease student and parent anxiety about starting school.
