NEWS FROM STUDENT COUNCIL ---

The Summit Hill Student Council is sponsoring a TOYS FOR TOTS toy drive from Nov. 20- Dec. 12.  On Thursday, our school kicked off the toy drive by having a representative from the United States Marine Corps come and talk with our students about the history and benefits of the TOYS FOR TOTS program.

The Student Council is encouraging each class to donate ONE toy.  Additionally, Summit Hill will be a drop off site for any additional toys. Anyone can donate a toy!  Toys must be brand new and unwrapped. If you have questions regarding the toy drive, please contact Mrs. Chatham

Thank you in advance for helping bring joy to a child's holiday season by donating a new toy.  Your contribution means the world to the children who otherwise would not have a single gift this holiday season.

We will now have Sgt. Jones here on Monday, November 24 to kick-off our Toys for Tots drive.  Again, thank you so very much for making time in your busy morning to come to this 10 minute kick-off for the toy drive.  We think Sgt. Jones will have a bigger impact than I would on getting the word out about this great service project!

The chorus is going to part of a group “Sing-for-Santa” night with other elementary schools from the Atlanta area at the Gwinnett Gladiators Game on Friday, Dec. 12 th at 7:30 PM .  For those of you who don't know, the Gladiators are a hockey team. J If any of you are interested in getting in on our group discount ticket rates for this night, please let me know by Monday morning.  The tickets are on the lower level and are $13 each .   It sounds like it will be a fun time so look at your schedules and see if this might be something you want to do!  Please write your checks out to SHE and place them in my box by Monday morning.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Ms. Chatham

Our 2 nd Pennies for Patients Spirit Day is this Friday and it is “Wear your favorite team jersey/ shirt.”  Whatever you guys did last month to help raise over $700 was amazing and we are extremely grateful for your support with this year long campaign!  If you wouldn't mind, please discuss with your students again the importance of giving whatever spare change they can on these spirit days for "Pennies for Patients" and that no amount is ever too small!  Thank you for your supporting this cause by reminding your class of why we are doing this at Summit Hill.  Many, many thanks! Pennies for Patients: Fast Facts About Blood Cancer

  • Currently, more than 785,000 Americans are living with leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
  • This year alone, 135,520 people will be diagnosed with one of the blood cancers; that's one person every five minutes!
  • Tragically, 52,320 individuals will die from these diseases this year. Among children, leukemia remains the leading cause of death from cancer.

I also just got this mass “thank you note” to those who give to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (which Pennies for Patients is part of) and I thought I'd share it with you incase you want to share some or all of it with your class.  It goes like this:

When I was 4 1/2, I was told that I had leukemia.  For 2 ½ years I went though a lot of bad stuff.  I had 130 weeks of chemotherapy.  I had 15 spinal taps.  My hair fell out 4 times and I've had to swallow 4,123 pills.

Today, I am finally done with my treatment and I am a survivor.  Mom says that when you help The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society you're helping cure cancer so that other kids won't die.

Thank you!
Jacob
