School Guidance and Counseling Program at Summit Hill ---

Our program is preventive in nature. We offer classroom, small group and individual counseling. Monthly we go into the classrooms to teach lessons. In the fall and winter we have groups for students at their grade level on such topics as study skills, friendship, self-esteem, separation/divorce etc.

The theme for this year is responsibility and respect. This is emphasized in our class lessons. We work in conjunction with the PTA on promoting all get along with one another. During morning announcements students either read quotes about our theme or act out skits. This helps us discourage any form of unwarranted teasing or bullying.

Students can be referred to us by parents, staff or themselves. We provide sign up boxes for students to see us. We work with the teacher on a convenient time for students to visit. Students come to talk about problems that keep them from focusing on their school work. Discussions can range from friend, school work, family problems to someone being sick or their pet dying.

We consult with parents and staff regarding concerns they may have for a child's success. Lists are kept for referrals for tutors, counselors, or psychologists. The PTA has helped us start a resource library for parents on topics such as: parenting skills, children's behavior, attention deficit disorder, homework hassles, learning difficulties, medical issues, etc. Check out the parent shelf in the media center.
