| Art Education |
Philosophy: Art Education in Fulton County Schools is based on the philosophical approach, Discipline-Based Art Education (DBAE). This approach integrates the study of art history, art criticism, and aesthetics, as well as art production. As an elementary subject, instruction in art is based on the belief that looking at, talking about, and making art are essential processes for study by all students.
The study of art provides opportunities to nourish high-level thinking. When well taught, skills associated with artistic thinking include the ability to see clearly, analyze, reflect, make judgments, forge connections among ideas and information, and generate new ideas from diverse sources. Three additional issues are integrated fully into curriculum for art education:
- Cultural diversity: Discipline-Based Art Education is embedded within contexts and cultures across space and time.
- Interdisciplinary connections: Art specialists are encouraged to seek opportunities to work with classroom teachers to integrate a variety of curriculum content into art and art content into curriculum.
- Technology: The world today depends upon being able to, with a discriminating eye, “read,” interpret, consume, and (often) produce technologically rendered visual imagery. The creative use of art in technology will become increasingly critical to success in the work force of the 21st century.

| Music Education |
Philosophy: The study of music is important to one’s aesthetic, emotional, academic, physical and social growth, and is a significant part of the cultural heritage of all peoples. Through music, individuals have the opportunity to develop keener insights into the dignity and worth of people, to enjoy a more humanized educational environment, and grow intellectually and artistically.
Each student is unique and should learn to make independent judgments and informed choices with regard to personal needs. A developmental, sequential, and productive music education program encourages self-directed learning and creativity. Past musical experiences enable students to build a value system that is applied to new musical experiences.

Philosophy: Fulton’s Prekindergarten curriculum encompasses the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive aspects of the child’s growth in an age appropriate manner. It focuses on reading/writing, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, and physical development. Each of these areas includes a strong emphasis on skills and strategies needed to develop competencies in each of these areas.

Husky Tech Talk:
There is a lot of learning going on in the computer lab. Our typing programs give students hands on exercise to prepare them for their assignments that will be printed from the computer. We also have curriculum programs and games that give students the chance to put into practice that which they learned in the classroom.
Our more creative days have been spent working on seasonal projects that included carving a virtual pumpkin and stepping aboard the Mayflower. The students have also sent their best wishes to the soldiers in Iraq through artistic creations.
The older grades work in Microsoft Office Word regularly and this includes the use of Clip Art. They are looking forward to PowerPoint projects next semester. The students quiz themselves using Harcourt School Publisher's language arts site, Pearson SuccessNet and will be gearing up for CRCT preparation.
Summit Hill is lucky enough to have seven color laser printers for each grade level as well as 20 other laser printers throughout the school. We continue to add to the seven Promethean Boards which are a wonderful teaching tool and teachers have the ability to teach in the classroom with laptops from our wireless laptop classroom cart.
We encourage the students to learn something new every time they enter the lab. It might be something new on the keyboard itself or an educational game on a new program. It might be while they are taking a virtual trip on a travel website. There is so much to learn!
The Technology Department at Summit Hill,
Jane and Tracy
