Principal's
Passage
Dear
Parents,
We were visited this week by curriculum
coordinators and our area superintendent to see the Georgia
Performance Standards in action! Mr. Bob Lynch - Area
Superintendent for Roswell/Centennial/Milton Clusters, Dr.
Vicki Scott - Executive Director of Services for Exceptional
Children, Ms. Karol Stephens - Director of Science, and Ms.
Barbara Beaverson - Coordinator of ESOL arrived at 7:30 am to
see math classes in action.
They were blown away at how
solid your teaching was, how warm and connected each classroom
felt with a strong sense of community, high level of teacher
mastery of content, skillful higher level questioning, and
impressive differentiation!! Everyone commented on how well
organized lessons were and at how confident and poised
students were in their classrooms. We are so fortunate to have
outstanding teachers so dedicated to students and their
learning and thrilled to have students who come to school
ready to learn each and every day!
What a wonderful day
for a carnival Sunday was!! We had what seemed like the first
sunny day in October for the terrific family event. Thanks to
our PTA, staff, business partners, and all volunteers for
their hard work and passionate commitment to supporting our
school!!
Nancy J. Murphy,
Principal

A HUGE thank you to all of the
parents who helped top make the first Discovery Lab for
First Grade an Awesome one. The first graders had
fun learning all about the sound and learning about
sound travel through the ear. They enjoyed
learning the different pitch sounds, and how water makes
a difference in sound. A special Thanks to all the
lab leaders for keeping everyone on track and making
sure the kids had fun. Looking forward to the next

BOOSTERTHON
NEWS
On September 18th we had
our Boosterthon Fun Run in the gymnasium. Despite
the dreary weather outside, the kids were excited to run
for their school and had a blast doing it inside!
This year's Boosterthon, our primary PTA fundraiser,
raised over $82,000 for our school which will go to
funding programs such as Art Edventures, Discovery Lab,
and other curriculum enrichment programs--all thanks to
the generosity of our SHE families! And we are still in
the process of collecting even more pledges for our
school, so if you have not sent in your donation, it is
not too late! Because our kids were able to obtain
pledges from all 50 United States and fulfill the
Principal's Challenge, our principals will have to
dress up in costumes for the day! We also had a
cool pretzel party for the highest collection class per
grade level--the big yummy soft pretzels! Way to
go, Huskies!
A special thank you to our co-chairs
of Boosterthon, Sharon Leemann and Tammy Hlebec, for an
awesome job communicating to parents and teachers,
streamlining volunteers, and ensuring that everyone
involved had a great time! The parent volunteers
were a tremendous help on every level--many
thanks. Also thank you to the entire staff at SHE
for supporting our efforts with unbelievable enthusiasm
and excitement! This could not have been such a success
without any of you! |

Fall
Carnival
Thanks to all of you, SHE's
2009 Fall Carnival was a big success!
Thank
you, thank you, thank you to ALL who helped
envision, plan and
execute this major event.
It was a joy to walk around the school and see all of
the new and old families blending, visiting and laughing
together. Everything ran smoothly and it could not
have been possible without the cheerful army of
volunteers who braved the cold wind and kept smiles on
their faces. The SHE staff was wonderful as
always-helpful, willing to participate and patiently
rolling with all of the last minute changes to our site
plan. Even the
finicky weather gave us a break
so we could enjoy sunshine on carnival day. SHE
families came out in large numbers to fill all of the
volunteer spots, donate generously to the basket raffle,
enjoy
the carnival and support our school. GO
HUSKIES!!!
As we wrap up this year's
carnival and look ahead to next year's planning,
feedback would be most helpful. There are always
ways in which we can improve our event and any
suggestions or input would be welcome. Please
email Katie VanBrackle: kvanbrackle@bellsouth.net.
Thanks again,
everyone!!

Walk
with Webb
On your way to
school this morning, did you see all of the flashlight,
lanterns, and blinking orange wands? A group of
Summit Hill students were walking to school. This
morning, Mr. Webb and roughly 25 students, parents and
dogs walked to school. This was an arranged walk
with the neighboring subdivisions (Holcombe Farms and
Crabapple Brook). Last year the school wrote a
Safe Routes to School Grant. This was done in an
effort to reduce speed in front of the school and build
a sidewalk system within a mile surrounding the
school. This grant would give students a chance to
ride or walk to school with adult supervision. It
was also written in an effort to get students exercising
and reminding them that being environmentally
conscientious can be fun. We were awarded two
speed limit signs that visually let drivers know how
fast they are going as they approach the school.
In the past year there have also been sidewalks
connecting these specific neighborhoods and the
school. It was great getting some exercise in
before school!

created website is ready to launch and we need you! If
volunteering from the comfort of your own home is your
style, the foundation has a perfect position! There is a
need for a website administrator to help manage the site
functionality.
Watch for the foundation to be on
Twitter and Facebook in the near future. A HUGE
THANK YOU to Dan Sherman for his legal expertise and Bob
Klein for the awesome website design!!
If you are
