Principal's Passage

Dear Summit Hill families,

It is conference time here on the Hill. This is a great time of year to meet with your child's teacher and hear how your child is doing in school. It is also a wonderful opportunity for teachers to hear from you about how school is going. Please remember that whenever you have questions, your best and first point of contact is the always your child's teacher. If after communicating with your child's teacher you still have questions, the following chain of command is available to you as well:

Curriculum Support Teacher (Janette Shealy) or Counselors (Sally Drake or Randi Vaughn)
to
Assistant Principal (Don Webb)
to
Principal (Nancy Murphy)
to
Area Superintendent (Mr. Bob Lynch)
to
Superintendent (Dr. Cindy Loe)
to
Fulton County School Board

Construction on the walking track is about to begin! Representatives from Fulton County Schools facilities department and I met with the contractor this week, and we mapped out a timeline for the installation to begin. This walking track will be two-tenths of a mile long, 8 feet wide, and a crushed granite surface. Also installed with this walking track will be 2 concrete play pads, 20 feet by 10 feet, for bouncing balls and jumping rope. Our walking track will be on the front field of our school property. One of the conditions of this installation is to keep the topography of the landscape in this field. Our back-up septic fields are underground in this field, so we have to restrict construction of this track to a simple sod-removal of nothing deeper than 6 inches. When this track is completed, benches and signage will be added to commemorate our first grade teacher, Jannon Barker, who died suddenly in 2007 from leukemia. We are thrilled to see this project finally coming together, and our students and community will benefit from this extension to our playground. This track was funded completely from donations specifically for this project in memory of Ms. Barker.

We have had a great testing week for the ITBS and will anxiously await the results. We usually get these back by November. Watch for updates on their delivery to you for third and fifth grade parents.

Have a great week!

Nancy J. Murphy, Principal

Summit Hill's
Million Pages Reading Challenge

Parents, we are excited about our upcoming Summit Hill "Million Pages Reading Challenge!" Our goal is to work together as a school to read and record as many pages as possible. Students may record pages read from books, magazines, newspapers, etc. at school or at home. It is our hope that this program will help children realize how much fun reading can be.

The "Million Pages Reading Challenge" program kicks off on October 5, 2009 and continues until we read 1,000,000 pages!  If we read 1,000,000 pages, we have a special secret award that is hidden in the treasure box outside the media center.  Have your child write down the number of pages he or she reads and return the reading challenge form or classroom reading log to the media center. Additional reading forms are available in the media center, in the front office, and on the Summit Hill's Media Center website.

We look forward to your child's participation in this program and appreciate your support as we begin this new education initiative. Working together, we can make reading an enjoyable experience for everyone!
Light the Night

The Summit Hill family has been greatly affected and saddened by leukemia in the past couple of years.  We lost a wonderful teacher and friend, Jannon Barker, to leukemia on March 1, 2007.  Ms. Barker was a young, vibrant teacher who devoted her time and talents to the staff and students of Summit Hill.  Last year, we found out that another wonderful teacher, Carole Rocco, was diagnosed with leukemia.  Thankfully, Mrs. Rocco's leukemia has gone into remission and we are so grateful that she is on the road to recovery.

On Saturday, October 10th, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Association will hold a walk in Atlanta called Light the Night. In honor of Jannon Barker and Carole Rocco, some of our staff will walk together in support of this worthy cause.  If you would like to help us raise funds for cancer research, please send your donation to school by Thursday, October 8th. Please make checks payable to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Remember no donation is too small!  Thank you in advance for your support!
Summit Hill Fall Carnival
Fall Carnival planning is in full swing!  Be on the lookout for cake walk donation forms later this week and wristband pre-order forms early next week. Also, it's not too late to volunteer to help on carnival day----contact Donna Liberatore, dbliberatore@comcast.net to sign up.  See you all at Fall Carnival!  Sunday, October 18, 1 -5 pm!!

WHO is LSAC?

The Local School Advisory Council's (LSAC) over arching belief is in essence that the school belongs to the community and a large part of its success will be due to the work of the school council leadership team. The team is to be a cohesive force in the school that plans for school improvement in cooperation with the principal and other parent organizations within the school.

As Council members, we are advisors to our school administrators and ambassadors to our parent community. We want to hear your comments, opinions, concerns, and questions - so please feel free to communicate with us directly, LSAC Contact Information

Area 4:  Teacher Conferences

When you need to schedule a teacher conference, keep these few things in mind. Whether you wait for the formal conference at the beginning of the year or want to meet at another time, it is always best to let your teacher know in advance what you want to discuss.

Schedule a date and time that works best for the teacher.  They know what time works best in their busy schedule to give you the necessary time and attention you are requesting.  Give them advance notice of what your concerns are, what specific questions you will be asking, and any other types of information you would like the teacher to have ready (i.e. work samples, test grades, observation notes, notes from another teacher).  Doing this will give the teacher an idea of what your concerns are, provide structure to the meeting, and allow your child's teacher time to pull all the necessary information so you can sit down together and have a fruitful discussion.

It is everyone's' goal to provide the best learning experience.  Knowing this and working together to solve any situation that comes up, will make for a successful school year.

Pound-ful Paw-fect Thanks

Our annual Family Movie Night showing "Hotel for Dogs" was very popular last Friday.  The evening was wonderfully warm, clear and calm ....a nice break to the rain-soaked weather we've had recently.  Many families spread their blankets and enjoyed friendly chat and good food, along with popcorn, candy and cold refreshments.  Special thanks go to Melissa Jackson and Karen Chambers (PTA Co-Chairs, Family Fun Nights) and their hard-working volunteer crew.  Also, special howling thanks go to Darren Chambers for going over and above by mowing the SHE lawn at last minute notice!

A big thank you from North Fulton Community Charities to everyone who donated CANS and COATS recently.  We filled 4 shopping carts with food and 3 large bags with coats.  With the low pantry stock and the recent flooding, our efforts really helped local families in need.  Thanks S.H.E!
ATTENTION VOLUNTEERS!

We are excited to let you know about our new volunteer sign in system, School Check In. Each time you are volunteering, please sign in on the computer located in the lobby where the volunteer log book used to be. It is very simple to use and is a much more accurate and efficient way to track volunteer hours for our school.

Just click on VOLUNTEER.
Click on SIGN IN.
Scroll down and click on your NAME.

To sign out, just go through the same steps.  THANK YOU!
