Principal's Passage

Dear Summit Hill families,

"Neither rain, nor sleet, nor gloom of night" can stop our Fun Run!!! We had a great time completing our laps in the gym in spite of our wet weather this week. Thanks to all the volunteers, the staff, and to the Boosterthon All Stars who helped us help our school. We have bolstered some fine character traits through our theme to STAND UP all week, and I have enjoyed talking to our students about meeting their goals.

As you prepare to collect your student's pledges, please look for a BLUE envelope today in his or her book bag.  Please make sure to clearly label it with the student's name and teacher's name.
All checks should be made out to SHE PTA and all envelopes are due Friday, Sept. 25th.

Next week students in grades 3 and 5 will be taking the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS). While this is not the benchmark test that determines whether or not a child passes a grade level, it does give us useful information on your children's potential. Please support your child by making sure he or she has:
·    plenty of rest each evening
·    a healthy breakfast before coming to school
·    an ON-TIME arrival
·    and a positive attitude to do the best they can on each component of the test

Students who arrive after 8:05 will be directed to the media center until all testing is complete. We ask that all parent volunteers to wait until testing is complete before visiting other classrooms. We usually finish testing by 11:00 am on most days. If you are scheduled to help out in any class, please check with the staff at the front desk to see if testing is complete.

Thanks for supporting our students and staff and our school this week!! Have a great weekend!

Nancy J. Murphy, Principal
Picture Day is coming Tuesday, September 29, 2009! School portraits by Lifetouch offer casual, studio-style photography that gives students more freedom to create a look that's truly their own. Visit www.lifetouch.com for clothing suggestions, grooming tips, program details and more.  Look for order forms coming home on September 25th.  All picture orders are prepaid.

Got Talent?

Participate in the PTA's National Art Reflections Program.

The 2009-1010 theme is "Beauty is........."

Are you looking for a way to show others your talent as a photographer, visual artist, writer, composer, choreographer or film producer? Let your talent shine by creating an original piece of artwork in one of six categories:  Photography, visual arts, literature, music composition, and dance choreography or film/video production.

Check the SHE website for entry forms & participation rules or, stop by the Art Reflections display table located in front of the cafeteria. Artwork can be dropped off in the drop box located on the Reflections display table. Any questions contact Tammy Hansen @ thansen123@aol.com.
Deadline to submit your artwork is October 12th.

Helping Your Child At Home:  Online Textbook Access for Students!

Last week teachers issued students their online textbook access information.  Our newest textbooks (in math, science, and social studies) offer websites with terrific online textbook access and special interactive features for students in grades 1-5.  Please note that because Harcourt reading and language are older textbook adoptions, that website offers only student activities.

Please ask your students to share this information with you if they haven't already done so.  Students in grades 3-5 should have attached their bright orange website information sheet inside the cover of their agendas, and 2nd graders have theirs attached in their take-home folders.  First grade teachers sent their student information sheet home with last week's Friday papers.

Having this access means that parents can see books and use them to support student learning at home.  Another great benefit is that students may not need to take heavy books back and forth from school!

hotel for dogs

MOVIE NIGHT

Come and join us for a night of fun with the family. We will be showing the movie "Hotel for Dogs" on September 25th at 6:30 p.m. with the movie starting at dusk.  So pack up the whole family, bring a blanket, and your own picnic dinner.  Popcorn, candy, and bottled water will be available for purchase.  We will be collecting canned food for the North Fulton Community Charities Food Pantry.  REMEMBER... Movie Night is a family event and not a drop off event.  All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Hope to see you there!
Lexile Workshop

On Monday, September 28th, Michelle Howard will conduct a mini-session on the newly purchased LEXILE site license and software.  Last year, the PTA supported the purchase of LEXILE to allow teachers to generate individual reports for your children.  Come learn how to understand these reports and hear about ways to access the website for home use to help your children become better readers.  This informative event will be held in the Media Center from 10:40am-11:40am.
SAVE THE DATE!
Dads, you are invited to enjoy a donut with your special student(s).  Donuts with Dads will be at 7AM on Oct 7th (A-L) and Oct 8th (M-Z).  More info to come!

"Hats on Day" to Help Find a
Cure for Cancer

Please help support the Summit Hill "Light the Night" Team by wearing your favorite hat on Friday, Sept. 25th.  Any spare change you can donate to our school team would be most appreciated.  Our goal is for every student and teacher to donate a dollar on Sept. 25th which will make our overall goal $850!

We are wearing our favorite hats in honor of all of the students, teachers, parents, friends, or any other loved ones who have had to wear a hat while being treated for cancer.

"Hats on Day" was founded in 1995 by four St. Louis sixth graders after they found out that one of their classmates had cancer.  These students wanted to do something special to help this child feel normal, as well as help raise money to help find a cure for their friend.  The money we will raise on our "Hats on Day" will greatly help families affected by cancer and help doctors find a cure.

READY.  SET.  GO!  Starting the school year off right! (cont.)

Area 2:  Organization of Binders, Backpacks and Study Space.

You have all already bought those all important back to school supplies, binders, subject folders, notebooks, pencil pouches, accordion folders, etc.  How many of you buy this with the hope that this year will be the year that your child stays organized?!  It isn't always the tools that are the problem, it is the time taken to keep things organized.

Let's go back to the agenda and advanced planning.  Set aside specific times during the week to go through the binders and back pack.  We suggest two times a week; Sunday and mid week.  Schedule this planning time in their agenda so they know it is an important activity.  This will also give you a good idea on whether or not the organizational system you have set up is working.  If not than you can begin to modify and tweak a system that better fits your child's needs.

Understand doing this will take more time at the beginning and your child may need you to walk them through it for a while.  But, as you build this time into your regular routine, it should begin to take no more than 10 minutes to keep everything on track.

Remember, scheduling 15-20 minutes with your child on Sunday night to plan the week and organizes their materials sets the tone for the coming week and teaches them basic organizational habits.

Calling All CPA's

Thank you to all the families who have contributed to the foundation! Exciting plans are being implemented to enrich our children's educational experience at Summit Hill. Those plans include interactive white boards and new playground enhancements. The foundation is beginning the research and procurement process for these purchases. The foundation board is in need of a CPA to assist with the process of expenditures. If you have family or friends interested in contributing to this exciting process, please contact Nancy Murphy at MurphyN@fulton.k12.ga.us or Beth Leigh at Leighs6@bellsouth.net. Please continue to invest in our children! Donations may be mailed in or dropped by the front desk.
box tops
Just a reminder to keep clipping those Box Tops, Campbell's labels and Tyson Project A+ labels as well as saving the Coke bottle caps!  Our first contest is scheduled for next Friday, September 25th.  Submit your labels and caps to your child's classroom in a zip lock bag with child's name, grade and teacher on the outside of the bag - please include bottle tops in a separate bag in case there is any residue on the caps.

The winning class will be announced on Friday, October 2.  Each child in the winning class will receive a prize.  Please contact susan.warren@comcast.net for questions or if interested in volunteering.
We'd like to give a HUSKY HIGH FIVE to Sherri Murphy for organizing a very successful Vision and Hearing Screening!  Thank you Sherri!  And thank you to the following volunteers who helped things run smoothly: Jill Durham, Jamie Rech, Chris Kittila, Libby Guida, Lisa French, Kimberly Rosenthal, Cindy Henderson, Jeanne McGinty, Christy Thomann, Anne Lemoyne, Chantal Paskins, Lynette Huddle, Linda Copeland, Kim Harris and Shelia Pineyro.  We appreciate our volunteers!!
