Dear Summit Hill
families,
We have started our PTA's fund raiser, the
Boosterthon Fun Run. We had an exciting pep rally to explain
our students' involvement in this fitness-based and character
education service project for our school. The young men who
run this event are caring, engaging, enthusiastic, and
dedicated to supporting students. I hope you all took time to
review this program with your students and discuss your
involvement as well. All students will participate in the Fun
Run on September 18th and parents are encouraged to come to
cheer students around the temporary track...just 1/16 of a
mile. Thanks to our teachers and volunteers who have prepared
this wonderful event for our students!
Our early
release day is coming up next week. Teachers and staff members
will be meeting to review our school's CRCT scores, survey
results, and other resources to make recommendations on our
school improvement plan. We will also be learning more about
how we can improve instruction in reading, math, and writing.
Many of our teachers are experts in specific strategies to
enrich instruction for all learners. Having this time to share
best practices and to learn from each other as well as from
recognized scholars in education has been a valued experience
for all of us. Through our Foundation and PTA, we hope to
further professional learning for all staff members to better
server our students. Thank you for your support of this
important learning time for our staff.
Hope you will
join us at Movie Night and have a great weekend!
Nancy
J. Murphy, Principal |
| Our first Early Release day is Wednesday, September
16th. Students will be dismissed at 11:15 a.m.
Students will not make up this day because it counts as a full
day. |
This committee of
parent volunteers works directly with the counseling staff at
Summit Hill Elementary to help teach our children and students
the importance of being responsible citizens and treating
themselves, and others, with respect. Their goal is to
educate students on good character traits and behaviors, such
as Citizenship, Honesty, Kindness, Giving, Fairness and
Compassion.
The committee coordinates and/or
performs various activities including decorating bulletin
boards and hanging posters throughout the school, Counselor's
Week, Red Ribbon Week, selecting articles for the PTA
newsletter, student skits, "Words of Wisdom" presented by
student newscasters and various projects designed to bring
character education to the students during the school
year. The Character Building Committee is seeking
several volunteers. Time commitment varies and many projects
can be done from home. If interested, contact Shannon Encinger
at sencinger@bellsouth.net or
770-265-2190.

Bus Change
In an effort to
create more room on the buses for students,
transportation has switched some buses around.
Students who used to ride bus 362 will now ride bus 494. The
students who rode bus 494 will now ride bus 815. This
change went into effect on Wednesday morning after
reminders were sent home with the students by
transportation last Friday and Tuesday. Please
remind your children of the bus change if this affects
them.
Parents,
please remember that students may not ride a
different bus or get off at a different stop without
approval from the Transportation Department (Crystal
Brooks 770-667-2970) Thank you for helping keep our
students safe. |
Foundation Funds!
The
foundation is beginning the research process for the
interactive white board expenditures. If anyone is
interested in helping with this endeavor, please contact
the foundation at summithillfoundation@gmail.com. The
Summit Hill Foundation initiatives will serve as a
catalyst for innovation, enrichment and educational
excellence for our school and community. These
initiatives include reading resources, staff salaries,
playground improvements and interactive white boards.
Relying on public funds to achieve these goals would
take years or may never happen. By providing
supplemental funding, the foundation can support these
needs immediately. Donations can be mailed to the
school or dropped by the front desk. Thank you for
investing in our
children!!

READY. SET.
GO!
Starting the school year off
right!
Starting the year off right
is a goal every child and parent sets for
themselves. Achieving that yearly goal is as
simple as looking at 4 areas that make a big impact on
how the rest of the year will go.
Area 1: Agenda's and Advance
Planning. The school agenda is the
first tool in teaching your child how to plan in
advance, keep track of homework, plan projects, and keep
up with outside activities and learning time management
skills.
Set 10-15 minutes aside on Sunday nights
and have your child open their agenda to the coming
week. Use the blank spaces at the end of the day
to write in outside activities, homework and study
times, family activities and study and project
times. Don't forget to include the times when
these things will take place. Don't forget the
weekends.
You
are teaching them to start seeing the bigger picture; to
anticipate what is coming up, set goals, prioritize and
plan their own schedule. They are also leaning how
to manage their time on a day to day basis and do long
term planning for projects, tests and other
activities.
