Principal's Passage

Dear Families of Summit Hill,

It was great to see you all at Curriculum Nights. Our teachers are well-prepared and fully committed to providing solid and meaningful instruction, mixed with just the right amount of fun and engagement! We are thrilled to have had the chance to share our processes with you and look forward to a lot of learning.

Thank you for your patience as we have gotten to know your children, in getting them into the right levels of instruction for reading and math, and as we have worked through the edits mandated by our school system's 10-day count. Our school system is still working with many schools to adjust staff for enrollment, but I do not anticipate any more changes for us at this time. However, we could see an increase in enrollment after Labor Day; just stay tuned and we will keep you informed.

Our band and orchestra classes are still getting all students matched up with instruments, but we hope to have all students grouped by instrument for instruction next week. On band and orchestra days when students carpool, please remember to post a sign in the passenger side of the windshield with your students' names. That makes our carpool lines flow smoothly.

Thank you for your support of our PTA and our Foundation. Keep checking those dates that rate for all events at Summit Hill! The Boosterthon is coming and we hope it will be a huge success!!
Nancy J. Murphy, Principal

Reminder:  For student safety, always be prepared to show ID when you are checking out your child.

Please check out the website for more information on Mr. Johnson's award. Last week's newsletter posted an invalid website, click here for the link

Special Information from our Special Area Teachers!

Our special area teachers in art, music, and physical education have prepared some informational sheets on their curricula and their grading practices here at Summit Hill. These are in alignment with our school system's standards and policies. Please review these links to learn what Art, Music, and Physical Education are all about at Summit Hill and Fulton County Schools!

A Few Reminders from the P.E. Department

remember your sneakers

Please remember to have your child wear sneakers on P.E. days. In the warm weather, we tend to see a lot of sandals so we appreciate your help in keeping your children safe by having them wear their sneakers on P.E. days

Interactive Whiteboards in Every Class!

The SHE Foundation seeks to provide every child with access to interactive whiteboards! Through this technology intiative, we can provide a new generation of teaching and learning in our school community. The foundation will support the purchase, installation, and maintenance of interactive whiteboards in all grade levels over a period of the next 3 years. Summit Hill's school improvement plan is designed around improving student achievement in reading, through concentrations on written expression. The use of these interactive whiteboards allows students immediate feedback and collaborative discussion. Questions about interactive whiteboards. . . go to www.Prometheanworld.com and learn more. This technology will cost approximately $4,000 per class.

How can you help? Buy a whiteboard for your child's class! Volunteer to serve with the foundation! The SHE Foundation is a non profit corporation which accepts tax deductible individual donations, employee matching grants, chartiable organization grants and corporate donations. If you are interested in purchasing an interactive whiteboard for your child's class, please contact Nancy Murphy,
MurphyN@fulton.k12.ga.us. Or donations may be mailed to the school or dropped by the front desk. A huge thank you to the many families who have already contributed!!

CANS and Coats- Community Outreach

NFFC

Summit Hill's first community outreach event is September 1-11.  Bring your canned goods to the boxes by the cafeteria for North Fulton Community Charities food pantry.  They are in desperate need of all items but especially appreciate canned fruits, vegetables, meats, tomato products, as well as pasta, peanut butter, jelly, and healthy cereals.
On the 11th, at Family Movie Night, you may bring cans, but also bring your laundered, gently used winter coats.  Gloves, hats and scarves accepted also. We will be giving away gently worn S.H.E. spirit wear items, (from old students) one per family donating coats, until they're gone, as a "green" way to say thank you for helping your community!   Questions? Contact Sharla Calloway callogal@yahoo.com 678-867-0952 .

Attention All Student Artists!

We are having an art contest and the lucky winner will have his/her creation on the front cover of the 2009/10 SHE Student Directory.  If students would like to enter, they should turn in an 8.5" x 11 " size drawing or painting to their teachers by Sept. 11th.  Participants should  pencil in their  name, teacher's name and grade on the back of their art work.  Good luck all aspiring artists!  If you have any questions, please contact

Nancy Morris nancydavidmorris@comcast.net or Jean Sanyal  Jean_Sanyal@yahoo.com.

 Let's Do Lunch!

Many parents enjoy having lunch with their children and we like having you visit with your children.  This is permissible after the first two weeks of school.  This gives us the opportunity to get ourselves organized and establish our routines. We do ask that you follow the following procedures:

1.        We request that you eat at the visitor's tables on the stage because space at class tables is limited.  Please take only your child to these tables (no extra friends).

2.       When having lunch at school, please follow our "Greet and Good-bye" procedures.

(1) Sign in for a visitor badge at the front office.
(2) "Greet" your child at the cafeteria  and say "good-bye" at the cafeteria door. Under no circumstances are visitors to go to the classroom to wait for the child or return to the classroom after lunch unless prearranged with the teacher. This constitutes an interruption to the instructional day of all students in the class.

  • We ask that parents refrain from bringing foods in from commercial vendors such as Wendy's, McDonald's, or Burger King.  If these items are brought in for lunch, please place them in a brown paper bag to minimize disruptions for other students. We have bags at our front desk should you need one.

If you have newsletter items, please e-mail them to Wroblewski@fultonschools.org by Tuesday.  If you do not receive a confirmation email, please call the school @ 770-667-2830 ext. 120.
