Principal's Passage
Dear Parents,

This has been such an exciting opening for us! We have been waiting since February to get to know our students and now they are finally here with us. I have so enjoyed extending our kindergarten tradition of distributing our school mascot, the Summit Hill Husky, to all of our students. I met with students in all grade levels to share our practices of the past and to relay our one-time exception to issue Huskies to all grade levels, along with some explanations of how to walk with "Husky Pride" down our long hallways.  Please ask your students about the underlined words, tradition and mascot, to see what they remember of our conversation this week.

Thanks to all volunteers who made Sneak-a-Peek such an organized, informative, and inviting event for our families! We appreciate all the work that our volunteers, teachers, and staff did to make the morning so smooth and exciting.

Have a great weekend and thank you all again for a fabulous first week of school!!

Nancy J. Murphy, Principal
Parents, the stage will be unavailable for parent lunches until Monday, August 24th in order to establish our cafeteria routines.  Thank you for understanding.

If the decision is made to close school due to inclement weather, local television and radio stations will broadcast this information.  Radio station WSB 750 A.M. will broadcast emergency school dismissals.  Calling the school is usually not possible due to limited telephone lines and high volume.  In the unlikely event that schools should be dismissed during the day, please help us by talking to your child about emergency procedures and discussing with your child which neighbor's home he/she should go to if necessary.
UNDERSTANDING
THE TEN DAY COUNT

At the beginning of school, classroom assignments are made with careful review of many criteria to create positive and productive instructional settings for all of our children.

Our enrollment is affected by the opening of new subdivisions, students new to our school who register daily, and student attendance during these first 10 days.  Many schools are experiencing over-enrollment situations while others have totals under original projection at this time.  It might be necessary to reduce or expand the number of classrooms at a grade level to reflect district and state guidelines for class sizes.  Scheduling students in specific courses, such as speech, orchestra, band, and special education classes also require a tremendous amount of time to negotiate to meet all state and county guidelines. If it is necessary to add or collapse a class or change a child's teacher, we find that our children adapt beautifully.  Generally speaking, they accept this change more easily than the rest of us.

At this point, we are still under our original projection for total enrollment; however, at each grade level, we are enrolling students every day and we feel pretty comfortable at this total enrollment.

We have been monitoring our enrollment daily and are still working through the intricacies of scheduling every student in all that he or she needs. Please know that we will continue to keep you informed should any changes be necessary.

The Fulton County School System screens students for eligibility for gifted services twice a year.

II.    Classroom Screening- Local schools select a two-week period from January 5 -February 26, 2010, to review all students in their school.
Students who meet either the automatic screening OR classroom screening criteria AND who have supporting data gathered from test history, products, and/or advanced content levels are referred for gifted placement testing. Once referred to testing:
