Sandtown Awards and Honors

Sandtown Middle School Honors Art students Abrya Gates and Adam Levine received awards for the Law Week Art Contest at The Georgia State Capitol Rotunda on April 30th. Ms. Gates’ collage won first place in the contest and depicted Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln with other political images and text. Mr. Levine’s portrait of Abraham Lincoln accompanied by an eagle and flag won second place. The contest is sponsored by the Atlanta Bar Association and is open to all 3rd through 8th grade students in Fulton County. Awards are given in two categories: 3rd-5th and 6th-8th. This year marks the bicentennial of the birth of Abraham Lincoln, regarded by many as our nation’s greatest and most eloquent president. Lincoln, who devoted much of his adult life to the practice of law, was the quintessential American lawyer-president. His background in the law shaped both his actions and his oratory. For Law Week 2009, Atlanta and Fulton County students were encouraged to commemorate Lincoln by exploring this rich and resonant theme through art. Congratulations to the students and Ms. Igberease, art teacher at Sandtown.

Sandtown is one of 16 Fulton schools that earned the ENERGY STAR designation by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. The label recognizes exceptional management of energy use. EPA's national energy performance rating system provides a 1-100 scale that helps organizations assess how efficiently their buildings use energy relative to similar buildings nationwide. A building that scores a rating of 75 or higher is eligible for the ENERGY STAR designation. (2008-2009)
