Fulton elementary schools receive art education directly from The Woodruff Arts Center
Two Fulton County elementary schools have been selected to partner with The Woodruff Arts Center in an innovative program bringing the arts to life for students. Seaborn Lee Elementary School and Woodland Charter Elementary School will participate in the Arts Partners initiative.
The goal of the three year partnership is to establish a school culture where arts education is an integral part of the curriculum. Teachers will engage in professional learning built around the works of art of The Woodruff Arts Center. Among many activities, they will lead students through art exploration and 21st century skills using critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication.
Woodland Charter Elementary in Sandy Springs and Seaborn Lee Elementary in College Park engaged in a rigorous application process to be chosen. Making the three-year commitment, each school will dedicate a planning team of teachers and administrators as well as demonstrate a strong commitment to arts education. Woodland Elementary School principal Dr. Ruth Baskerville emphasized the school is already dedicated to arts integration and added, “Our students will experience true wonder as professional artists-in-residence make stories come alive.”
Arts Partners has five key features: engagement with works of art, classroom residencies facilitated by Woodruff Arts Center teaching artists, professional learning workshops, demonstration teaching and mentoring, and an arts leadership academy.
“Through this amazing partnership every student will get to experience the Atlanta Symphony, art exhibits, a stage play, and have resident artists support instruction. We are grateful and deeply humbled by such a generous gift,” says Dr. Emily Massey, principal of Seaborn Lee Elementary.
