Math Curriculum Planning Retreat Professional Learning Communities in Action
The Elementary Principals from the Westlake, Creekside, Hughes Cluster created a collaborative planning session to improve student achievement in their elementary schools.
Thirty (30) teachers from grades 3-5 from Oakley ES, Renaissance ES, Stonewall Tell ES, EC West ES, Cliftondale ES, Randolph ES, Seaborn Lee ES, Palmetto ES, Liberty Point ES, and Campbell ES met at Seaborn Lee Elementary School to plan collaboratively and create teacher support groups.
Strategy Boards™, a concept created at Seaborn Lee ES to support backwards design and to effectively outline those strategies that are tried and tested true for mastery of math were created during the full day workshop. All teachers developed the next unit board, previewed assessments together, shared strategies, and created PLC email support groups.
Aila Dark, Math Coach, Timmeko Parks, Seaborn Lee CST, Daphney Mills, Math coach, and Thomas Gumes Seaborn Lee teacher and Dr. Emily Massey, Principal facilitated the event.
“The laughter, ah-ha moments, hugs, and sincere concern for all students radiated through the workshop. Our teachers realized that they are the experts, they can learn so much from each other, and the importance of collaboration between the schools. We look forward to the 2nd session coming soon,” stated Dr. Emily Abrams Massey, Principal at Seaborn Lee ES.
