Affidavit of Residence Required

Starting this year, the Fulton County School System will require that all parents/guardians submit a notarized Affidavit of Residence form to the school. This requirement applies to both current and new students and will be required annually.

The purpose of the Affidavit is to make sure that only students who reside in Fulton County attend our schools. Our reputation as one of the best school systems in Georgia has resulted in some families who live outside of the Fulton attendance zones finding creative ways to enroll their children in Fulton schools. These families are taking advantage of our outstanding programs and services – without paying the Fulton taxes that are used to fund our schools. The notarized Affidavit legally verifies that your child resides in our school attendance zone, or has an approved hardship or other placement.

Math forums highlight new state curriculum

Parents, you can learn more about the new Georgia Performance Standards math curriculum at six forums during October.

Fulton County Schools Director of Math Curriculum Lori Fanning will give a presentation followed by a question-and-answer session. Each meeting begins at 7 p.m. in either the auditorium (high schools) or gymnasium (middle school).

Creekside High School, October 4
Milton High School, October 8
Banneker High School, October 15
Sandy Springs Middle School, October 22
Roswell High School, October 25
Chattahoochee High School, October 29

Kindergarten through second grade, as well as sixth and seventh grade, already are using the new math curriculum. This year, students are seeing changes in grades 3-5 and 8. High school students begin the new math standards in 2008-09.

EARN $ FOR IHS SIMPLY BY SHOPPING!

Help support our school's needs by earning money through the Kroger "Earning Plus Learning" program and Target's "Take Charge of Education" program. Students, parents, grandparents, friends...anyone..can make a huge difference for us just by shopping at Kroger and Target!

Kroger will contribute 4% of your eligible purchases to the fund which is then distributed to participating schools based on their total purchases for the school year. You only have to sign up once. Just present your Kroger Plus Card and a letter that was mailed to you by IHS (or available for pickup in the front office). Then, every time you make a purchase and swipe your Kroger card, contributions will be made.

Target's program will raise funds for our school every time you make a purchase using your Target Visa or Target Card. We will receive a percentage of the amount of each purchase in the form of a cash donation. It's easy...just visit www.target.com/tcoe or call 1-800-316-6142 to designate Independence High School as your school of choice for the "Take Charge of Education" program.

Thanks to all who take the few minutes needed to register and participate in these valuable programs that will greatly benefit our students.

October

Warm Coat Drive
October 22-25, 2007

Once again, North Fulton Community Charities is sponsoring a Warm Coat Drive in October for families in need.

Independence High School will continue its support of this drive by collecting all donations in our front office and delivering them to Alpharetta United Methodist Church for collection.

The following message in from North Fulton Community Charities:

We will be collecting new and gently used coats, hats, mittens, gloves, and scarves for sizes infant through adult. Families who qualify for NFCC’s Holiday Program are invited to select their “new” coats on Saturday, October 27 at the Waller Park Recreation Center, 250 Oak Street in Roswell.

Last year, families arrived well before sunrise to choose their coats. In just two hours, 2000 coats were given out. However, for the second year in a row, we ran out of coats so families were given vouchers. These vouchers were then used in our Thrift Store as more coats became available. Please help us meet our goal this year of providing coats for every child and adult in need!

Textbook Adoption Materials will be displayed in our Media Center for Parents, Teachers, and Administrators review from October 29, 2007 to November 20, 2007. Textbooks, CDs and various instructional materials will be made available for review and comment from the following academic areas:
Science
Family and Consumer Science
Business Education

Science textbooks and instructional materials being considered for future use in Fulton County Schools are currently available for review. The K-12 textbooks selected as a result of this process will be used beginning in the 2008-09 school year to support the new science Georgia Performance Standards.

Proposed textbooks and instructional materials are on display at all Fulton County schools. The textbooks will remain on display until November 20, 2007. Parents, school system employees, and community members are invited to review the materials, leave feedback, and comment on their preferences.

November

Your opinions are important to us!The Fulton County School System is conducting its annual Parent Perception Survey from November 28th through January 14th. Please help us make our school better by taking a few minutes to complete this survey. The survey will be available online at www.fultonschools.org. If you prefer to fill out a paper survey, copies will be available in the front office. Surveys in other languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Korean, and Vietnamese) are also available at the school. Your answers will be shared with our teachers and principal for school improvement planning. Your identity and that of your child will remain confidential. If you have questions about the survey, please call the Assessment and Evaluation Office at 404-763-5600 ext. 154.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

You may have heard news concerning possibly tainted meat in Georgia schools. The Fulton County School System has received shipments of this beef; however, please be assured the meat is still in our warehouse and has NOT been sent to any school nor consumed by any student.

Student safety is one of our highest priorities. We take any type of USDA administrative hold or recall of food very seriously and act immediately.

Sincerely,

Superintendent James Wilson and Administration,

Fulton County School System
