Flu Update

  • Any child at school with flu symptoms should be referred to the clinic and subsequently sent home.
  • All flu viruses present the same symptoms (IE - Type A, H1N1, etc).
  • In most cases H1N1 is only being confirmed in cases of hospitalization.
  • Regardless of the type of flu or whether cases are confirmed, the treatment processes are the same.
  • Keep children at home for 24 hours after the symptoms resolve and fever subsides without fever reducing medicine.
  • Insist children and staff practice proper cough etiquette and that they wash hands regularly with soap and water.
  • Encourage children and staff to be vaccinated against the seasonal flu.
  • Assist Student Health Services with monitoring absences/attendance rates.
  • Reminder - students and staff who have fully recovered at home do not need a doctor's note to return to school (in most cases - The Cluster Nurses and Student Health Services can assist you if you have questions).
