Introduction to Art

Introduction to Art is a prerequisite to all other classes offered in our curriculum. It is a semester-long course which begins with review and reinforcing the language of art that students have been exposed to in other art classes prior to this class. These concepts are then applied following a Discipline-Based Art Education approach. Each unit of study employs the study of Art History relevant to the study. Art criticism is originally used to become more comfortable with talking about art and then as a means of self-evaluation in determining how the student may improve his or her own artwork. Aesthetic theory is explored when applicable. Students are involved in exploring many different media and processes in producing both two dimensional and three dimensional art. Students use a sketchbook as an art journal for work both in class and outside of class.
