Ceramics I
Ceramics I - Learn to listen to clay with your fingers! Slab, pinching, and coiling are methods used in hand building clay. Functional and decorative works such as mugs, whistles, and Folk Art "Ugly Jugs" are created by students in this class.

A group of Row Houses on display in the Teacher Lunchroom
Below are closer views of these Row Houses which are formed as a slab which is decorated using stamps pressed into the clay to give it surface texture. Other layers of clay are added for the windows, doors, signs and roof or crown. Pieces are then stained and decorated with underglazes.

Below are two examples of "Ugly Jugs" which are formed using thick coils of clay and shaped using a template for the silhouette. Features are added with small bits of white clay used for eyes and teeth. These pieces are glazed with a glaze which imitates the traditional "tobacco-spit" glaze used by folk artists.
